Linux can't open any desktop environments and tty says "No space left

Hello, first of all, I won't be able to share any logs directly due to not being able to open any virtual environments.

So, as I was using my system I noticed dolphin says there are 0 bytes free on the system I deleted some things however the amount didn't change so I decided to reboot. After reboot, I was able to get to sddm but both of my desktop environments failed to open. So i got to tty and after I log in tty gave me a long message that my zsh history cant be read because of "No space left on device". I was sure there were more than 10 gigabytes. I ran sudo df -h / and it returned my disk being %100 full.

Here is the output of lsblk -f: https://i.ibb.co/rxW25P5/20220103-193213.jpg

I looked at some solutions and the one that seemed most likely is that my blocks went bad. They suggested that I should get a live usb session and enter sudo fsck -vcck /dev/sda2 sadly after a 5 hour wait it couldn't find any errors.

First of all, you will - see the 1st link below.

(df -h; df -ih) | curl -F 'f:1=<-' ix.io
sudo du -hs / > /tmp/du.log 2>&1 # this is going to take a while
cat /tmp/du.log | curl -F 'f:1=<-' ix.io

The filesystem is full and it's not the inodes and it's also not stashed by some mount.
You can check where most space is lost

sudo du -hs /*
# and on a guess
sudo du -hs /var/cache/*

Re: Linux can't open any desktop environments and tty says "No space left

Just did a "sudo pacman -Sc" and freed 10gig's system works now, so thank you very much! However, I would still like to know what caused that. I was sure I had more than 10GB free on my system before it instantly dropped to 0bytes. Was there a leak? If yes where? Is there a way to find that out?

Re: Linux can't open any desktop environments and tty says "No space left

What did "sudo du -hs /*" say where most space is "lost"?
Probably your $HOME ?
There're more elaborate tools to analyze this, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/List_o … ge_display

Drive space unlike RAM does't "leak" in that sense - maybe it's time to clean up your porn collection ;-)

You can use ncdu to browse what's using all of your space.

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

Re: Linux can't open any desktop environments and tty says "No space left

Hmm, there is an oddity, when I search with du /run is 72GB when I search with ncdu /run is 192GB and all that comes from /run/timeshift. More weirdly while ncdu searched for files it found over 300GB files, my system only has 250GB. Most weirdly in that /run/timeshift I can see my home folder with everything inside but I excluded home.

But yeah I still don't know suddenly where my 10GB's went away or what program caused that.

Just did a little search with stacer, it found 37GB's of application cache, should I remove them or will they be needed later?

Re: Linux can't open any desktop environments and tty says "No space left

That information is too generic to be reasonably answered.
As to "why can ncdu exceed my disk space" - it probably doesn't deduplicate hardlinks and cross filesystems (the latter also holds for du by default)
