Hello,
This is my first post on this site, so I'm sorry if there are format errors in my post. I have been trying to get my valve index headset working on my computer, however beyond accessing SteamVR home I have not gotten any other games to work. For instance, attempting to launch ANY game through SteamVR home results in a variation of the following error to pop up on the desktop: Error --- KIO Client steam://launch/378860/VR (This error also occurs when attempting to start SteamVR through the icon in the top right of the desktop window.)
Because of this, I have been trying to boot into the games of interest through the normal steam desktop window (after opening steamvr). From here the issues do not present identically but all result in no video output to the headset. For Gmod vr the audio, controllers input/tracking, and headset tracking works without video output to the headset. For ProjectCars2, the game freezes at startup when selecting the steam vr mode, unsure if audio is working but video displayed for a split second before disapearing and freezing during one of the boot attempts. I have changed ProjectCars2 launch options to include -windowed to force it to boot in windowed mode, otherwise it ignores my settings and boots in fullscreen ignoring any changes made to the settings beforehand. Payday 2 produces audio, but no video.
Additonally, by running steamruntime in console I was able to obtain this output which accompanied the KIO errors: kf.service.services: KApplicationTrader: mimeType "x-scheme-handler/steam" not found
I am hoping this is the right place to post this, as I am running arch linux. This computer was originally running windows 10 but I've recently switched to arch linux, currently using KDE Plasma and a Geforce 1070, 32GB ram, 1TB SSD, and an i7-4770. pacman -Syu was performed prior to making this post and had no effect on any of the issues. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just ran into the same issue as you on my Vive. The way to fix this is right in your question
! Go to System Settings -> Applications -> File Associations, click "Add" at the bottom, select "x-scheme-handler" in the top box, then type "steam" in the bottom box. Click "OK", then click "Add..." under "Application Preference Order". Type "steam" in the top box, click "OK", and it's fixed! Your window will look like this if everything's set up correctly (minus the steam icon unless you add that yourself): https://imgur.com/a/A4BGX5X
