External monitor doesn't wake up from sleep when laptop wakes up

When my computer wakes up from sleep, my external monitor doesn't awaken.

- External monitor is set to be the primary display
- KDE Plasma apparently sees the monitor in some capacity, as the laptop screen shows the secondary display, and I can move my mouse "over" to the other screen (though it displays nothing as it's still asleep)
- Everything works as intended on Windows (i.e., it isn't a hardware problem)
- If I switch to another TTY, then switch back, the external monitor wakes up (this only works once per TTY, leading me to believe w.e. happens when switching can help diagnose the problem?)

I've tried solutions suggested in this, this, this, and a few other suggestions scattered about the internet. None of them have worked.

Ultimately, what I'd like is a means/direction of diagnosing the problem. journalctl -b -0 -p 3 doesn't give any related messages (and does not populate w/ anything more when the problem occurs), neither does increasing the priority show anything. Are there other places I should be looking? How might I e.g., determine what's being done when I switch back-and-forth between TTYs?

* Does the external display complain that there's no signal (or the bezel light stays in sleep mode etc) or is the output "just black"?
(In the latter case try to suspend the compositor w/ SHIFT+Alt+F12)
* What's the output of "xrandr -q" after the S3 and does it help to alter the mode of the external display (forth and back)?
* Please post a complete system journal (sudo journalctl -b) after the S3 to illustrate the involved hardware and maybe there're actually errors in there that just look unrelated.

- The bezel light stays in sleep mode, but restarting the compositor didn't work unfortunately.
- "xrandr -q" showed edP-1 and HDMI-1-0 both as connected, and DP-1-4 as disconnected (laptop, external monitor, and display port respectively).  Changing the mode of the external display (HDMI-1-0) forth and back did cause it to turn on. What does that indicate?
- Here's "journalctl -b" from 2 min. before the sleep to a minute after waking (and switching TTY to activate the monitor):

What does that indicate?

Failed handshake - maybe allows a workaround. Does it work multiple times (unlike the VT switch)?
Can  you please post the actual xrandr output?

Do you get the problem when not locking the screen during the suspend?

What tipped you off that it's a failed handshake? Is this a common thing? (Also: Is there a way of fixing the core issue instead of working around it?)

HDMI (specifically HDCP) is hyper-fragile shit - the default behavior is to fail (I'm serious about that)
It was tacked onto the protocol by the MPAA after the fact, is time sensitive and there's effectively no margin for error (ie. if the signal is a bit too too weak or the crtc can't keep up during the HW resume the handshake fails, no retry. You're stealing valuable rem… "content")

You can try to get away w/ only changing the refresh rate and if that doesn't work the least annoying approach is probably to set the other modeline before the suspend and only change back to the desired one after the resume.
Alternatively try the DisplayPort connection.

Oh, man. I didn't even know that was a thing; DRM stuff is incorporated into hardware like this!? -_- That's such a bummer.

Then the workaround would be something like... writing a little script that runs on wakeup?

You can just drop a script, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Power_ … stem-sleep that calls xrandr pre- and post suspend.
nb. that you need to run it as desired user and also export the display (or "sudo -u myuser xrandr --display :0 …", since hardcoding is a bit ugly, see https://gist.github.com/AladW/de1c5676d93d05a5a0e1 for inspiration)
