downgrade darktable

how can I go back to the previous version and make it so that updating the computer won't upgrade darktable? My computer is not powerful enough for 3.8. The lag is not too horrible but horrible enough so that I don't want the new features. I got a little endian CPU. Is that why. I maxed out RAM.
