gnome night-light does not work on hdmi-over-usb-c display

I use a Framework laptop, so the only HDMI option I have is a USB-C to HDMI adapter - I use the one supplied by the company. On the builtin display, Gnome's nightlight feature works fine. On external displays, it does not work - I've tried this on two displays using two different cables in all screen configurations (extend, mirror, and external-only). The image is displayed correctly but with no color temperature adjustment.
