Sound doesn't work after boot

I use KDE and suspect this may be a problem with pulseaudio, but I'm not really sure where to look.

When I boot my system any reproductor connected to my computer does not work. It starts working when I physically disconnect and then re-connect the reproductor, then the system correctly registers the device and sound works immediately. I can kinda live with that, but it's an annoynce. Any ideas how do solve / debug this kind of problem?

Re: Sound doesn't work after boot

Update - the audio stops working when I switch user on the Desktop. Not sure what that means.

Re: Sound doesn't work after boot

During not working what's your output for

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
sudo dmesg | grep snd

What do you mean with "switch user"? Where do you do that and with which means and for what reason? Depending on how you do that this can be completely normal as only one process/user can normally access a sound device at the same time.
