Hi!
I use kde 3.5.5. When Kde is going to play the sound with arts, the whole system just hangs for 1,5 seconds. Then sound plays, and everything backs to normal. And it happens every time, the sound is going to be played. When in kcontrol I turn off option to run arts with highest possible priority, there is no hang, but sound plays with 2 seconds delay. artsplay somesound gives:
***
Can't connect to sound server

How to solve this problem without arts uninstallation?

kde control center > sound & multimedia > system notifications > player settings
Set it to use an external player .
I use ogg123 as it can play 99% of the sounds KDE gives.
( Do Pacman -S vorbis-tools to install this player )
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
(A works at time B) && (time C > time B ) ≠ (A works at time C)

Yes, the KDE arts sound system is far from good. I don't think I know anyone who actually uses it. Most use a custom to play their sounds. Like Lone_Wolf suggested.

Like Lone Wolf I use an external player to replace arts. I personally prefer the "play" command from the "sox" package, this handles pretty much all formats commonly used for audio, not just ogg. Now that ALSA supports software-mixing there's no reason to use arts anymore as far as I can see.

Alsa software mixing is a holy S***. The best choise is to use a card with hardware mixing or I've found out that esd works pretty well as esdplay also
