[SOLVED] After upgrade hundreds of MB additional free space

I updated two computers yesterday and I was surprised to see that some 500 and 800MB disk space was made available, respectively. I am normally used to see a decrease in free space after an upgrade.

What is responsible for the reduced size of the installation this time?

It was because of the linux-firmware package. Read https://archlinux.org/news/linux-firmwa … splitting/ .

You can uncomment VerbosePkgLists in /etc/pacman.conf to see the size difference of each package when upgrading.

OK, thank you all for your replies. I have seen the news and suspected that it is the linux-firmware, but did not expect to be that much. Most of the space is saved in the /usr and /var directories.
