USB2 Cardbus Adapter

Hi - I'm attempting to speed up data transfer to my external hard-drive so I've got a USB2 cardbus adapter. When I plug it in, hwd does seem to detect it:

However when I connect the hard-drive it doesn't appear in /dev so I can't mount it. I've only had USB1.1 before - do I need to install some drivers for the cardbus adapter or for USB2?
