I'm trying to download things on firefox and the save as window doesn't show when picom is active. I'm using dwm opacity-client patch, so picom works. I'd like to know the name of the "save as" window to set its opacity to 1.0.
The problem here is dmw patch is setting the opacity of the "save as" program to 0, i just need the name of the program to fix it.
I know now the problem is not picom, it's dwm patch, but i'm gonna leave this:
I'm using picom-git from AUR right now, but i tried the official repository and picom-tryone-git from AUR, and the same error happens. I tried changing configurations like adding firefox and thunar to the opacity-rule.

I'd like to know the name of the "save as" window
"xprop" and click the window.

So do you set the default opacity to 0? Wouldn't it be easier to set the default to some nonzero value and use rules to specify any that you'd actually want at 0 (are there any such clients?).

"xprop" and click the window.
Here are the results of xprop the save as window. The WM_NAME is "Guardar como"
WM_STATE(WM_STATE):
window state: Normal
icon window: 0x0
_NET_WM_WINDOW_OPACITY(CARDINAL) = 0
_NET_WM_STATE(ATOM) = _NET_WM_STATE_MODAL
WM_HINTS(WM_HINTS):

Initial state is Normal State.

_NET_WM_OPAQUE_REGION(CARDINAL) = 0, 0, 897, 503
WM_WINDOW_ROLE(STRING) = "GtkFileChooserDialog"
WM_TRANSIENT_FOR(WINDOW): window id # 0xc0002b
_NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE(ATOM) = _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_DIALOG

WM_NORMAL_HINTS(WM_SIZE_HINTS):

WM_PROTOCOLS(ATOM): protocols WM_DELETE_WINDOW, WM_TAKE_FOCUS, _NET_WM_PING, _NET_WM_SYNC_REQUEST
WM_CLASS(STRING) = "firefox", "firefox"
WM_ICON_NAME(STRING) = "Guardar como"
_NET_WM_ICON_NAME(UTF8_STRING) = "Guardar como"
WM_NAME(STRING) = "Guardar como"
_NET_WM_NAME(UTF8_STRING) = "Guardar como"Here is a section of my config.h of dwm (i've already compile it):
static const Rule rules[] = {
/* xprop(1):
* WM_CLASS(STRING) = instance, class
* WM_NAME(STRING) = title
*/
/* class instance title tags mask isfloating opacity monitor */
{ "Gimp", NULL, NULL, 0, 1, 1.0, -1 },
{ "firefox", NULL, NULL, 1 << 8, 0, 1.0, -1 },
{ NULL, NULL, "Guardar como", 0, 1, 1.0, -1 },
{ "thunar", NULL, NULL, 1 << 8, 0, 1.0, -1 },
{ "Subl", NULL, NULL, 1 << 8, 0, 1.0, -1 },
{ "Lightscreen",NULL, NULL, 0, 1, 1.0, -1 },
{ "qalculate-gtk",NULL, NULL, 0, 1, 1.0, -1 },
};As you can see, i added the "Guardar como" as the comment indicates WM_NAME(STRING) = title and the VM_NAME in my case is "Guardar como". I tried too puting:
{ "firefox", "firefox", "Guardar como", 0, 1, 1.0, -1 },because the comment says "WM_CLASS(STRING) = instance, class", but it did not work.

No, no, my default opacity is 0.9, but this dialog "save as" is by default to 0. I don't know where is that being configured. Also, already review the dwm.c file and didn't see anything related to that.

How do you know the problem isn't picom? It has its own sets of opacity rules.

How do you know the problem isn't picom? It has its own sets of opacity rules.
I'd say because i can increase the opacity with the keys defined by dwm. But now that I write it, it doesn't make sense. It could be a picom issue.
this is a secction of my picom.conf
inactive-opacity = 1.0;
active-opacity = 1.0;
blur-background-exclude = [
"window_type = 'dock'",
"window_type = 'desktop'",
"window_type = 'dialog'",
"_GTK_FRAME_EXTENTS@:c"
];Added "window_type = 'dialog'" and changed active and inactive-opacity to 1.
wintypes:
{
tooltip = { fade = true; shadow = true; opacity = 0.75; focus = true; full-shadow = false; };
dock = { shadow = false; clip-shadow-above = true; }
dnd = { shadow = false; }
popup_menu = { opacity = 0.8; }
dropdown_menu = { opacity = 0.8; }
dialog = { opacity = 0.8; }
};Added dialog = { opacity = 0.8; }. None of these worked for me.
# Specify a list of opacity rules, in the format `PERCENT:PATTERN`,
# like `50:name *= "Firefox"`. picom-trans is recommended over this.
# Note we don't make any guarantee about possible conflicts with other
# programs that set '_NET_WM_WINDOW_OPACITY' on frame or client windows.
# example:
# opacity-rule = [ "80:class_g = 'URxvt'" ];
#
opacity-rule = [ "100:name = 'Guardar como'" ];Added the opacity rule. I think this would be the way to configure its opacity on picom. Didn't work.

I tried with some subprocess of other programs and it's setting the opacity of the subprocess to 0.

some subprocess of other programs
You might want to be more specific - notably the file dialog isn't a "subprocess" of firefox.
That being said:
_NET_WM_WINDOW_OPACITY(CARDINAL) = 0it's actually DWM or some other client, not the compositor.
Is this the patch you use?
https://dwm.suckless.org/patches/clientopacity/
Please post your complete, patched dwm sources somewhere.

You might want to be more specific
Properties of folders/files on thunar, rename of thunar, the open file option on sublime, lightscreen options, select icon theme option on lxappearance, vlc options. All of these dialogs are invisible when picom is running.
Something strange happens with sublime, the open file option is invisible, but the open folder option is visible.
Is this the patch you use?

All of these dialogs are invisible when picom is running.
Those are not subprocesses, but just dialogs.
I don't see where the code would end up w/ 0 for dialogs (or just floatign windows)
If you revert it, restart the session (to get rid ofthe stale props) and check the properties of the window, is "_NET_WM_WINDOW_OPACITY(CARDINAL) = 0" still there?

What do you mean by restart the session? Removing the patch of dwm or just restarting xstart and doing one of these commands https://kb.iu.edu/d/aeee?

Revert the patch, recompile/install dwm, restart dwm and at least also firefox *afterwards* (the critical part is that the existing _NET_WM_WINDOW_OPACITY won't disappear from windows, so firefox will carry that around until it's restarted)

Well, no _NET_WM_WINDOW_OPACITY either.
You could re-installed the patched dwm to see whether this re-causes the _NET_WM_WINDOW_OPACITY value to turn 0 on those windows, but personally I'd probably prefer to keep that control central to picom (and use its rules) and not bother w/ dwm setting the opacity on top of that.

A lot of thanks. I tried making windows transparent, but did not find a tutorial that explain how to activate transparency for all windows with picom. So I guessed that this couldn't be made with dwm just by itself and, what a surprise!, a patch for opacity on dwm exist.
As you may know picom by default has inactive its transparency function (at least for my installations of picom). By changing some values on picom.conf, I managed to enable transparency on all windows. Then, made some tests to see whats the actual way to do it and share it here, but ended leaving just focused windows transparent. Don't worry about that, I'll figure out how to do it.
I'm gonna put this as solved, because I think the solution is uninstalling dwm patch and making a good configuration on picom.
Again, thanks.

I figured out the solution; just comment/remove this line of picom.conf:

DWM should™ not touch override_redirect windows anyway…
Offline
No, dwm was not messing with override_redirect. (With the dwm patch uninstalled) I had to remove that line, because the inactive windows were not transparent. And the issue with the dialog windows is solved having unistalled that patch.
The problem it's solved. I reinstalled dwm patch, just for curiosity, and the dialogs windows still are 100% transparent. It's a dwm patch issue, I don't know why, but I think dwm is not messing with override_redirect.

Hi everyone
I know this thread is a little old but I recently had this problem and didn't find an answer here but I've ascertained the cause and come up with a solution.
Finding nothing in my internet searches, I decided to have a sit down with the code and trace the problem. I found it, and my modified code fixed the problem on my system.
since op appears to have the same problem as me, I thought I'd leave it here for future google searchers.
tldr;
Here's a simple diff for dwm.c that nicely fixes the issue

In the patch the opacity member is declared but not assigned in the client structure in dwm.c
This lack of assignment is generally not a problem because its later assigned within the applyrules() function
/* function implementations */
void
applyrules(Client *c)

}Notice the client's opacity is being initialized to the defaultopacity defined in config
Now apply rules is called from the function that creates the client from an X window in the first place (manage())
Here's where the problem lies:

XMapWindow(dpy, c->win);
focus(NULL);
}as you can see, the opacity is being sent to the X Window from the client's opacity. But as we've seen the client opacity isn't assigned unless applyrules() is called
and you can see a simple case where that does not happen. In the specific case we're dealing with in this problem (the window is transient)
I moved the call to applyrules outside of the if statement as I do not see a problem with calling this function on a transient client.
This fixed the problem on my system.
If you don't want to move applyrules out of the if statement, you can alternatively make sure that c->opacity is initialized to defaultopacity either in its declaration in the client struct or at the top of manage()
