Thinkpad X31 Special Buttons

I am running the thinkpad-kernel from the community packages, and it runs great.  However, I am confused about something.  From the console, I can use the special key command (such as Fn+F3 to shut off the monitor) and they work.  I can also switch consoles using Alt+Ctrl+F?.  However, when I am in X these keys no longer work, which the exception of the brightness keys and the thinklight key.  Is ACPI overriding these keys?  Is there a way I can get some of them to perform their original functions?
