How to activate the microphone?

I have trouble activating the mic. I'm using the method described in this post to test it but nothing is being registered.

I have tried Alsamixer to unmute the mic, but of no avail. The mixer doesn't do anything if I press the 'm' key on top of mic-boost. However other channels such as speakers can headphones can be muted / unmuted alright.

What kind of mic do you have, what kind of controls do you have? Post

arecord -l
amixer -c0 #Replace the 0 here with the actual index from the previous command

Solved the problem. It seems that mic was muted by Pavucontrol.

How do I mark this question as solved? Couldn't find a way to do it by a quick search.
