The latest upgrade (Oct 3rd) caused Gnome to stop before fully loaded. Xfce would load, but apps would freeze and it was not usable.
So, I deleted the /etc/udev folder and re-installed hal and udev. I also did a "rm -rf .g*" in the user home. This caused gnome to start working again. I hope this ends the latest round of woes in "current".
I do not know if the udev action was needed, but I got warnings during the upgrade abut the udev config files being changed. since I had never modified them, I figured that a fresh install would cure any problems.
Does anyone have a guess as to what happened?

moving away the following directories:
.gnome .gnome-commander .gnome-desktop .gnome2 .gnome2_private .gnome_private
indeed solved the problem, and the only lost setting were launchers on the panels
