Just to clarify the solution helpfully posted below,
1... logged on, bring up POSTED. and if NEW icon on
left, click on the right column, new post.
then...
2... bring up NEW, and newer threads one has not then
read can be title-checked and/or read.

When I log in and select "New" from the options at the top right I see a "[ New posts ]" option next to each new thread. Does that not do what you want?

I think the "within a thread" might mean something, that could be clearer if OP decided to elaborate.
Online
another forum software: status bar atop the post:
.......................................
saturday at 10:09 pm ...; share icon; bookmark icon; post # 11
....................... [ then the next post: ]
yesterday at 6:34 pm...; NEW POST ICON; share icon; bookmark icon; post # 12 [status bar atop the post ]
[only unread posts have the icon present... ]
.....
So one is informed from the icon present, or absent, which post to begin reading that one has not read before.
this is maybe the only forum I usually visit, afaik, that has not that
feature enabled yet if one has logged on.

Press the "posted" button next to the "new" button.

If you click any thread with the unread icon before it, forum will show you that thread with the first unread post at the top .
Your description suggest that other forums* you visit are post-oriented , while archlinux forum is thread-oriented.
I know atleast 2 other forums (running different software than this one) that behave the same .
* are those other forums running on discord ?
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Fix found. bbs.archlinux.org >> " posted" click on RIGHT thread [new post ] link if an unread icon appears on the LEFT. [ per Awebb's advice ]
