application launcher .desktop files no longer work!

After updating today to KDE Plasma 5.23.90  and KDE Frameworks 5.90.0 ".desktop" files no longer work.
When I try to open a program via right click application menu a thing opens called "KIO client Chose application". I don't understand that: I want to open the application defined in the .dektop file and not chose an application to run an application!
How can I get back the functionality to open apps via right click menu? I never saw this regression ever before!

You need to reboot/restart your KDE session after upgrading frameworks/plasma components to ensure nothing "old" is still running/expecting different versions.

Also, kde-unstable generally mandates [testing] and testing-community and by extension possibly testing-multilib are these enabled as well?

I wasn't fully aware of the issues coming with enabling kde-unstable (enabled it some time ago in the hope, I guess, of a proper session managment in okular!).
Once disabled problem vanishes indeed.
It does remain however even with everything else activiated what you mentioned in your post.

You need to activate *and* update your entire system to the testing branch, if you don't know what that means or entails you'd best stay clear of all testing repos/kde-unstable as the naming implies they can be unstable.

Obviously, that was what I did in the very first place! didn't change anything, faulty behaviour remains.

Unfortunately I hit this error now also on an other machine, and this time deactivating all testing/unstable repos and doing a full rollback with "pacman -Syuu" didn't help:

the application launcher menu (by right clicking on the desktop) no longer works: instead of launching the app in the menu the corresponding .desktop file is opened with kate or kwriter.

How can I further debug this?
