Kernel 5.16 Choppy GUI

Hi,

I have noticed a choppy GUI rendering after a recent system update to linux 5.16.1.arch1-1.
Whenever the computer has to load or newly display something - for example images while scrolling the webpage, the whole display together with the mouse cursor freezes for ~0.2s to 1s. Once the freeze lasted for ~10s.

The problem occurs independently of DE (tested with KDE/Plasma and DWM) and windowing systems (x11, Wayland).
I suspect that the issue is related to IO. Rendering glxgears does not show any problems, but as soon as I start something which requires disk IO or perhaps load GPU resources, the whole display together with the mouse starts chopping (~0.5s freezes in ~2s intervals). The effect definitely does not look like ordinary lag (low CPU/DISK/GPU resources). I have checked Intel GPU and CPU resources and everything is close to idle. YouTube playback in Chromium works without issues until I open the play bar (in fullscreen) or start scrolling recommended videos.

Using the LTS kernel (5.15.15-1-lts) solves the problem.
My laptop is DELL XPS 15 9550, using an integrated Intel GPU.
The issue is not with the CPU frequency or using the xf86-video-intel driver.

Does anyone have any idea what is happening?
Thank you in advance.

Re: Kernel 5.16 Choppy GUI

IO errors will show up in "dmesg", IO load in "iotop"

Re: Kernel 5.16 Choppy GUI

I am checking the kernel log difference between 5.15 and 5.16 (journalctl -k -p warning --boot=-1 -o cat --no-pager).

Linux 5.16 kernel is loading NVIDIA module? Could this be the issue and why there is a difference?
Also, the new kernel has some issues with Bluetooth?

Re: Kernel 5.16 Choppy GUI

I have removed all Nvidia related packages and the message is gone.
@seth: you were right

So, the Nvidia kernel module is not causing the problem and dmesg doesn't reveal anything I could relate to this problem.

Just recently I experienced a ~20s freeze, unable to move the mouse, but I was still able to scroll the webpage using the keyboard. Immediately I thought, this could be the touchpad issue. But then, how can glxgears lag when scrolling webpage in Chromium?

Currently, I am writing this message using kernel 5.16 and the experience is worst than using raspberryPI PC - text on the display frequently does not follow keyboard typing.
I have never experienced such performance or choppiness difference when switching kernel versions.

Re: Kernel 5.16 Choppy GUI

using an integrated Intel GPU

nvidia

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PRIME# … erse_PRIME
Also blue note in https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PRIME#Reverse_PRIME

Please post an xorg log (would also be interesting whether the input lag is recorded there or the stalled pointer is purely visual)

Re: Kernel 5.16 Choppy GUI

One more thing I noticed is when typing and holding a key the display does rarely gets refreshed. Repeated characters usually show up only when the key is released. Strangely, the same lag is not observed while holding arrow keys and moving the cursor.

When testing on Wayland, the glxgears performance drops to 27 FPS just by moving the mouse cursor across the screen.

Here is the whole output:

Re: Kernel 5.16 Choppy GUI

Probably not relevant but you want to get rid of these

[ 13.308] (II) FBDEV: driver for framebuffer: fbdev
[ 13.308] (II) VESA: driver for VESA chipsets: vesa

No idea how we square the input lag into this, but if it's not CPU, IO or the display server, let's look at the the intel module.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … flickering
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … on_(VSYNC)
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … nable_fbc) (*dis*able this)

Is the nvidia chip a dedicated VGA (can you run a session on it and attach an output there to completely circumvent the intel chip?)

Re: Kernel 5.16 Choppy GUI

I have applied all three recommendations.
Is seems that the performance has slightly improved, which renders aforementioned choppy experience less obvious.

The overall experience is still much better on the LTS kernel.

I am also sure that it must be something related to the Intel GPU.
The dedicated NVIDIA GPU shares frame buffer with the Intel on this laptop, so it is impossible to use it as a 'stand alone' GPU. The only way to use it is through bbswitch and optirun by running only certain applications on the dedicated GPU. Once I found a project which configures X11 to run a whole xserver on the Nvidia GPU but sadly I was not able to make it work.

I also tried to use the Laptop in tty for some time. There, I did not experience any lag issues using kernel 5.16.

Re: Kernel 5.16 Choppy GUI

The settings address issues that should have an on/off impact - not "slightly less unbearable".
What if you "export MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=i965" (somewhere up in hierarchy, ideally /etc/profile.d/some_script.sh, to hit the entire session)?

Re: Kernel 5.16 Choppy GUI

I have managed to fix the issue by downgrading DELL XPS 9550 BIOS from 1.14 to the good old version 1.12. Do not know how and why the newest kernel does not work nicely with the newest BIOS version. Downgrading either of them somehow fixes the problem.

Should this be reported to kernel developers?
In my opinion, the issue resides in the DELL XPS BIOS. I already had numerous problems with almost all their versions. It is hard to understand how can one of the best laptops have that crappy BIOS. Each version fix something and bring whole bunch of new weird issues.

@seth: Thank you for helping and please accept apology for sharing this burden.

Re: Kernel 5.16 Choppy GUI

How sure were you about the cpu frequency situation? Did you check

cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_cur_freq

for suspiciously low frequencies?
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/CPU_frequency_scaling

You could also look at limiting the c-state, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … ete_freeze (ignore the context)

Re: Kernel 5.16 Choppy GUI

I already had several issues with CPU frequency being caped to ~800MHz. I am not certain but I would say that faulty BIOS was to blame for that also (forgot which version).
This time the frequency was fluctuating normally from 1-2+GHz as reported by powertop and ksysguard.

It could be that Intel GPU got stuck in C state, but I rather use older BIOS then to increase power consumption. It is to satisfying to see ~7W usage and +8h uptime on a 6 years old laptop.

Re: Kernel 5.16 Choppy GUI

Thanks for reporting and investigating, I own the same laptop (XPS 9550) and I have the same lagging system since upgrading to kernel 5.16.

I can add the following information:
- there is no lagging when on battery power.
- as soon as I plug in AC, it begins to lag.
- disconnecting AC sometimes recovers the system (only a reboot with AC disconnected recovers the system fully).

CPU frequencies according to @seth's command when on battery are usually around:

800208
800023
800371
800009
799930
800003
800094
800342

As soon as I plug it in, it goes up to:

3248338
3154761
3495045
3150588
3197017
3289576
3281305
3287208

And stays there.

Re: Kernel 5.16 Choppy GUI

So it lags when on AC all cores run full steam?
What if (on the AC) you force the governor to "powersave", https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/CPU_fr … _governors ?

Yes.

seth wrote:

Setting the governor to "powersave" via cpupower seems to have no effect when on AC - all cores stay at 3.2 GHz.

When on battery power (after fresh reboot), I get 800 MHz on "powersave" and 3.2 GHz on "performance" (both without lags).

Re: Kernel 5.16 Choppy GUI

Can you lower the maximum frequency, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/CPU_fr … requencies
And does that have impact on the situation?

Is this btw. a model w/ hybrid graphics (and do you maybe get the nvidia chip activated on the AC)?

Yes, It is a hybrid model. I had the same issue with NVidia enabled or disabled ( bbswitch modprobe.d config ) on 1.14 bios.
Haven't noticed that running on battery also fixes the problem - have similar issue on my phone smile.
If I think again, I also noticed high CPU frequency, as Joey mentioned.

Lowering the maximum frequency works (confirmed via cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu[0-9]*/cpufreq/scaling_cur_freq) but the system remains choppy.

Re: Kernel 5.16 Choppy GUI

I have bisected the kernel, found the offending commit ("PCI/portdrv: Do not setup up IRQs if there are no users") and filed a bug against the PCI driver component.

Not sure if I CC'ed the correct addresses (this is my first report on the kernel), but let's see what happens.

Re: Kernel 5.16 Choppy GUI

Hi all,

I am experiencing the exact same problem on the exact same model of laptop (Dell XPS 15 9550). It looks like the conversation has moved from here to Bugzilla, but I'm not sure if/how I can contribute to the conversation/testing efforts in a meaningful way over there. Could anyone provide some pointers?

I have managed to fix the issue by downgrading DELL XPS 9550 BIOS from 1.14 to the good old version 1.12. Do not know how and why the newest kernel does not work nicely with the newest BIOS version. Downgrading either of them somehow fixes the problem.

You are currently running the v5.16 linux kernel on the 1.12 BIOS version without issues, right?

Could you please boot with

pci=earlydump

enabled and post a dmesg log?

dmesg > log

Re: Kernel 5.16 Choppy GUI

To put a close on this: the offending commit has been reverted in the kernel and thus the issues are gone since v5.16.10-arch1.
