[SOLVED] Bluetooth: hci0: Malicious advertising data. Stopping proc...

After the 5.16.3 kernel update from the regular 'linux' package, I started to receive a barrage of messages in dmesg, in average around every 2 seconds, similar to:

[   ss.sssssss] Bluetooth: hci0: Malicious advertising data. Stopping processing

Just upgraded to 5.16.4 and the problem persists, but following the idea of the message (some other device broadcasting some message?), I just turned off the Bluetooth in my Android phone, and the messages stopped. (That's the quick fix)

It seems it comes from a recent patch (Nov. 2021). I'll try to contact the developer, but just wanted everyone else to know, as this is very recent and found no related issues browsing the web around.

I'm observing something similar, also started after upgrading to 5.16.x series. Can't really tell if this is legit message or bogus, which affects certain drivers or hardware. I strongly doubt if there are blood-thirsting hackers in my area though.

Assuming this is a kernel bug then probably kernel bugzilla would be a good place to spark the discussion about it.

Thanks lucks for the report! A follow up: I was able to have a private email conversation with the developers, the issue was already fixed just a few days after the commit that introduced the false positive messages, but didn't got through to the stable kernels.

They asked me to patch those changes into a custom kernel for testing, so I rebuilt 5.16.4 with that change, and the issue is now gone.  I have already reported the results, and they will patch the stable kernels hopefully in the near future.

The fix made it into 5.16.5 upstream.
