[SOLVED]:::Failed to mount /home

Hi all,

YES I know you're going to ask for logs etc, just remind this old coot how to go about it with tty. (all I have right now on workstation)

When I built this system, and its brother over in my 1st post, there has been no issues in the last year, I didn't think so anyways.

I screwed something up and instead of taking the time to fix it, short on time, I used Timeshift backup created yesterday with system updates. I've never used it before, left the defaults when I set it up, just thought good to go.

Rebooted
Failed to mount /home

So I went into Timeshift and used yesterdays..

Rebooted
Failed to mount /home

System: btrfs, zstd:3, xfs
lsblk -f ...fstab... grub... all look good

Nothing of use here. Instead of assuming they all look good, post the contents, as well as a full

journalctl -b

Please tell me how to acquire screenshot/prints of logs/files using terminal. All I have to work with and I'll pastebin them.

I asked a simple question on how to get info from terminal to post it and got a link to pastbin. Had the issue with 1st post a year ago but I do know how to use it now, but not from terminal.

AS for help vampire, I'm not responding to that/this quick post, I'm sure there is a tutorial around here on how to use pastebin from terminal, that is all I needed to assist your request. I've been using this forum incognito for a very long time, since debut of AMD socket 939, and I'll refrain from using the login link.

As for the fix, remount /home directory.

I didn't mention that you're a help vampire I just pointed to the section that you should mention what you ended up doing as a solution. Was there a wrong entry in the fstab?

No, fstab was fine. The system has been running a year, even with the bad habit of rebooting after all update/upgrades.

I did a lot of duckducking, found a post on another forum, close to problem, shot in the dark worked.

Rules here also says don't post tutorials. But I used arch iso, cfdisk, chroot, a little typing, and it worked,

As to why it happened, verdict is still out. But I do think it was by using default settings in Timeshift install, it doesn't backup btrfs home directory by default. I don't use the home folders downloads pictures etc, all are on seperate drive, so I could of ticked backup home. Maybe I should of stayed with Rsync. If I wasn't feeling lazy and tried Timeshift to fix the blunder I created instead of the right way (grab last grey hair from jar, super glue it on), and dive in and fix it, I would probably never of known of this issue.

Pastebin, never used it, no idea, can open a file and paste it, no idea with terminal, I use terminal all the time though.

Both issues I've posted were boot issues and I concider both of them were user error.

I'm old school, install what I need, what works, leave it alone for years. I agree with Lone Wolf, systemd is bs..lol

I'll go back to incognito snooping, some post are hillarious.

I just could not rest until I found a solution in THIS forum for my problem(s) above, even after finding the solution elsewhere.

Searhing this forum, well all forums of this magnitude, are time consuming at times. Might find something in a minute or take hours or days, but you usually fine answers.

Found this post yesterday, [SOLVED] How to Restore from Timeshift Backup in a Live Boot?

If it wasn't a btrfs snapshot (in which case I don't know what you'd have to use... and you'd probably be able to recover without a live system, but I don't use btrfs yet so I don't know what I'm talking about)

Hmmmmm...ok

To use timeshift, you have to be able to chroot into your system and mount /home, or otherwise use a backup image in grub to boot. Otherwise rsync is your only option.

BINGO, just what I needed to know.

I also know there is option to added backups to Grub menu with grub-btrfs. Verdict still looming if Timeshift stays or Rsync returns.

I intentionally recreated the issue on my office workstation (clone of home), fixed it, came home and told my 10yr old great granddaughter to go fix my home workstation. She asked what did you screw up this time. Told her to just boot it up, she said now what, chroot in and (re)mount /home. She just rolled her eyes up and said is that all, jeeeeeeez.

I'll go back to incognito snooping, some post are hillarious.

p.s Officially solved, have netcat installed just in case needed.
