Cannot control fans at all on Dell Inspiron 15 3511

I cannot control the fans at all on the Dell Inspiron 15 3511. I have tried i8kutils (no bios controls for fans), and have tried fancontrol, both to no avail. I don't know what would help to provide, so just ask. Thank you for the help, in advance.

That's the first thing I went to. Nothing works there.

Re: Cannot control fans at all on Dell Inspiron 15 3511

So I went back and tried i8kutils again, and after an hour (too long), it started working, but not properly. Whenever I check i8kctl, it is running, but nearly everything is -1:

[hexagon@dell ~]$ i8kctl
1.0 1.6 862CPH3 -1 -1 -1 -1 -1 -1 -1
[hexagon@dell ~]$

This means that I can't control the fans on this, which leads to overheating, and trash battery life, which sucks for high school sad

Re: Cannot control fans at all on Dell Inspiron 15 3511

By the way, I've searched everywhere, and all over the forum, and found two things. Firstly, I'm the first person with this laptop on this forum (I searched Inspiron 3511, and only this post came up), and secondly, noone else has this issue, possibly due to the fact that probably noone ever has gotten Linux on this laptop, so searching anywhere is useless, so it's up to you guys to help... hmm

I have a similar machine and I don't face any problems like that. There must be some other thing causing overheating. See this reddit post for some laptop optimization guides.

But do your fans work? I want to play some games on this as well, and games and heat don't go well together.

FWIW you can generally not control fans on the majority of laptops manually. The BIOS is supposed to set this up correctly, you are not going to avoid heat while gaming, do the fans just not work at all even under high load?

The BIOS has no fan settings, and the fans don't run ever. Even browsing the web makes the laptop run really hot. Didn't happen with Windows 11, which came with it.

Mhm, Windows fast boot is disabled? FWIW Dells can have all sorts of weird firmware bugs, maybe check for an update here or do the old power down trick: turn it off, if you can - remove the battery and the cable for 10 minutes then start up again

Windows isn't on the laptop any more. I'll try that

Re: Cannot control fans at all on Dell Inspiron 15 3511

I just noticed an ACPI Error on boot, before the Welcome to Arch Linux message appears. It goes like this:

[ 0.148592] ACPI Error: AE_NOT_FOUND, While resolving a named reference package element - ^SPI1.SPFD.CVFD (20210930/dspkginit-438)
[ 0.148603] ACPI Error: AE_NOT_FOUND, While resolving a named reference package element - ^SPI1.SPFD.CVFD (20210930/dspkginit-438)
[ 0.148606] ACPI Error: AE_NOT_FOUND, While resolving a named reference package element - ^XHCI.RHUB.HS04.VI2C (20210930/dspkginit-438)
[ 0.148616] ACPI Error: AE_NOT_FOUND, While resolving a named reference package element - ^XHCI.RHUB.HS04.VI2C (20210930/dspkginit-438)

By searching online, I see that it is generally a firmware bug. I will try updating the bios soon, once I get a new USB, as my one broke trying to wipe the Arch ISO off to update the bios. hmm

Installing the new BIOS update has done nothing for the fans.

Re: Cannot control fans at all on Dell Inspiron 15 3511

I have one Dell Inspiron 3511 (bought late 2022) and it doesn't overheat at all. i8kutils indeed doesnt work as you have described but bios apparently handles fans properly.

I tested it using `stress` combined with a side  `watch sensors` window and the maximum temperature was like 80º C .

The average usage temp I'm getting is about 45 to 55 deg celsius (normal usage: browsing the internet, watching videos and listening to music). I also compiled a kernel to test it and temperature was also ok (under 60) for the most part of compilation which took about 60 minutes (pentium gold 7505 with 4gigs of ram)

you can change thermal profile with the `smbios-thermal-ctl` utility
as a plus: you can also inspect `smbios-token-ctl` to dump interesting tokens and select the right one to activate advanced bios options the --activate and -i token_id arguments.

Heres my `smbios-sys-info` output:

Libsmbios version: 2.4.3
Product Name: Inspiron 15 3511
Vendor: Dell Inc.
BIOS Version: 1.19.0
System ID: 0x0AB0
