[solved]no usb mem stick icon on kde desktop

How can I configure kde (3.5.4 arch current) so that when I insert a mem stick into the computer it shows up on the desktop as an icon/shortcut? At the moment I have to access it through media:/media/disk so I assume HAL is working correctly.

Desktop -> Behavior -> Device Icons
