I have an alsa audio problem and I'm at a loss.
I use different expresscard audio devices on my laptop. They work fine when I boot the computer with the card in them. They also work find after hotplugging, but only if I use 16 bit audio. If I use 24 bit audio, such as is the default when playing back via jackd, then the audio gets strangely choppy and the playback is slower. if I use the -S option jackd to force 16 bit audio, it works fine. I made a guess that it sounds consistent with playing 24bit audio data into an audio interface that expects 16 bit. It also works fine if I reboot the machine and play back at the regular bit depth.
The behavior is the same using an Echo Indigo IOx sound card with the snd_indigoiox driver, as well as using an old RME Hammerfall Cardbus interface (with an ExpressCard adapter).
Using different players, say mpv, works fine, as does playing back to the card via pulseaudio, but those all seem to use 16 bit audio.
I'm completely at a loss as to what could be causing the problem, expect saying it seems consistent with the hotplug not properly initializing the possibility of playback higher than 16 bit. Any help appreciated.
Thanks!
