Laptop Occasionally Partially Locks Up When Not Plugged In

I have an odd problem, and I'm not sure where to even begin troubleshooting it. When the laptop is not plugged into AC power, it boots up normally and everything seems to work. I launch my web browser, and will begin typing a discussion post for school on blackboard. After typing my post up, I can move my mouse around, but I suddenly will not have the ability to click anything. I can't click to a different spot in my post, click to close the tab, click to a different work space, or click anywhere else. I can't right-click either. I can still type, but none of my hot-keys work, and I can't launch a terminal, or do anything else. This only happens when the laptop is not plugged into AC power, and it seems to happen randomly after a few minutes.

It's a ThinkPad T400 with Libreboot. I'm running i3wm with xorg. I'm not using a display manager, I'm just using .xinitrc and startx to start interface.

I'd provide more information, but I have no idea what would be useful. Any help is appreciated, and I can provide any information requested.

Can you switch to a TTY? Does the CapsLock light still go on & off when you toggle it? Is the machine responsive to ssh connections or ICMP (ping) requests?

Please post the full content of ~/.xinitrc along with the X.Org log.

Have you installed the relevant (Intel?) CPU microcode and loaded it in the bootloader configuration?

If you're running a compositor then try disabling it and perhaps also check the memory health.
