Wayland native DM

hi,

I'm currently trying to make new Arch install witch is 100% Wayland native - for now I do not even want to install XWayland (part of this exercise is to find Wayland native tools that will replace the one I was using on X).

I trying to choose DM for this install and I have a bit of challenge.

I initially went with SDDM (as it is marketed as X11 and Wayland DM), but I saw that underneath is executes Xorg (as I do not have XWayland), but since this X dependency I want to replace it.
On Arch Wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Waylan … y_managers GDM is marked as "Runs on Wayland" BUT package for GDM still have dependency on xorg-server (even AUR package have this dependency).

Is there any DM in Arch that will run without installing X ?

Re: Wayland native DM

Are there multiple users of this system?
If not then you don't really need a DM at all.

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

You mean like auto login with automatic sway startup ?
If yes, then it is an option, although I would like some kind of password verification -> just for "illusion of safety".

Then don't configure auto-login. Just setup your shell config to launch sway when you log in to the TTY.

Re: Wayland native DM

You might try the log in managers listed on the sway website here.

Yes, although I would like some graphical login for 'wow' effect wink
I am working 99% time in terminal like apps, so at least in login screen I will look at something fancy wink

Thanks, will try to go with QtGreet for now.

You could also autologin to a locked session, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Session_lock#Wayland

Good suggestion, if attempt with QtGreet fails I guess this will be my next attempt.

Re: Wayland native DM

Wayland Login Managers: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Waylan … y_managers

The Wayland Login Managers also goes a little bit deeper and even promotes other projects such as ly, tbsm, etc. Play around with it, I personally recommend GDM instead since Gnome kinda does do some development / work on integrating Wayland with Gnome.

I would recommend reading up on Arch Documentation as per usual.

I would love to provide much help as I would experiment with Wayland but unfortunately I'm running an Nvidia card.. sooo yeaaaaah, I do hope other users and Arch Wiki can be of help to you though!

Re: Wayland native DM

Did you actually read the OP @imnotarealdocter?

They've already read that wiki page and given a reason why GDM isn't suitable for them.
