Monitor Real Estate

I'm not sure how to ask this question, but her is my attempt.

I have a laptop on which I've installed Arch Linux. This laptop GPU hardware produces a maximum resolution of 1920x1080. I have it hooked up to a KVM switch that allows it to be dual setup to monitors that support up to 2560x1440. Needless to say, using 1920x1080 resolution on the latter looks sub-optimal. Is there any software/configuration that I can use to limit screen real estate and just show 1920x1080 in a smaller window on the monitor so that it looks better.

Thanks.

Re: Monitor Real Estate

Check your monitor settings, should be changeable there if anything.

There does not appear to be anything.

Re: Monitor Real Estate

This laptop GPU hardware produces a maximum resolution of 1920x1080.

That is *extremely* unlikely (but for the used output eg. hdmi < 1.3; dual link DVI could do more; so use a different output if available) - but if it was/is true, you could not use the GPU to produce a 2560x1440 letterboxed 1920x1080 because it would still have to produce a 2560x1440 signal - just that most of it would be black. You'd therefore have to alter the monitors input handling as V1del suggests.

But please post the output of "lspci", "xrandr -q" and your xorg log (w/ the KVM monitors in use)
If you're down to HDMI but it's HDMI 1.20, you could run the output at 2560x1440@30Hz

I'm sorry, I'm a n00b so I don't really follow this discussion.

My laptop must somehow be "capped" at 1920x1080 because the display settings definitely allow me to select what my 32" monitor is capable of (2560x1440) and suggests it as the optimal/default, however, when I attempt to do so I get an error dialog. So all I can do is display 1920x1080 on a 32" monitor and it looks less "crisp" than a 1920x1080 "window" would on such screen real estate which is what I would like to attempt to do. The laptop is an HDMI output into a KVM HDMI and then HDMI output to the monitor.

Nonetheless, here is the output to the commands you suggested except for the "xorg" which I'm not sure what is meant.

Re: Monitor Real Estate

Your xorg log is here, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

The IGP is more than capable and I'd be surprised if an icelake device was equipped w/ HDMI < 1.3 - I assume the limitation here is the KVM, but there's a 1440p resolution w/ reduced blanking.

the display settings definitely … suggests  … I get an error dialog

xrandr --output HDMI1 --mode 2560x1440R

If there's an error message, please post it verbatim.

I don't think it has to do with the KVM because my (former) work laptop was capable of displaying 4K and its display was fed through the KVM and the resolution could be set appropriately.

Re: Monitor Real Estate

Screenshot of error on display setting

I asked you to use xrandr in order to get rid of this GUI because I assume it fucks up (because it's gnome)

seth wrote:

xrandr --output HDMI1 --mode 2560x1440R

Not "please show me an oversized screenhot of a silly GUI"
Remove the image (nobody cares and there's a 250x250 px limitation) and run the xrandr command and post the output.

I didn't interpret the quoted command as a request to run that command. I thought it was some missed cut text from all the text I pasted in. That is why I pasted the screenshot of the error which is what I thought you requested. Nevertheless, I did so from the command line and this is the error:

xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed

Unless there is an error code you want me to look for in a log file somewhere, that is the only thing that showed up in the terminal after I ran the command. The screen went blank for a second, then returned back to normal with only that verbatim output on the latter.

As you can see from the above xrandr output and what you suggested, I tried manually to do the highest resolution for the HDMI1 device:

xrandr --output HDMI1 --mode 2560x1440R

and I got the following (and this is all I got):

xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed

The above is the same modeline I get if I use the following command:

cvt -r 2560 1440 60

Which gives me:

# 2560x1440 59.95 Hz (CVT 3.69M9-R) hsync: 88.79 kHz; pclk: 241.50 MHz
Modeline "2560x1440R"  241.50  2560 2608 2640 2720  1440 1443 1448 1481 +hsync -vsync

So I tried adding this modeline explicitly with the following command:

xrandr --newmode "2560x1440R"  241.50  2560 2608 2640 2720  1440 1443 1448 1481 +hsync -vsync

And got the following error:

X Error of failed request:  BadName (named color or font does not exist)
Major opcode of failed request:  140 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request:  16 (RRCreateMode)
Serial number of failed request:  35
Current serial number in output stream:  35

I assume it was because it's in use, so I gave it a new name 2560x1440R_X", did addmode and set the output and got the same xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed error.

I tried the same thing without "-r" for the cvt command and was able to addmode for the HDMI1 but when I tried to set the output the monitor said it could not display the range and that the display would go to sleep in 30s. After that I had to log out and log back in.

I tried the following:

cvt -r 2560 1440 30

But xandr failed and said the refresh rate needed to be a multiple of 60.

Then I did it without the -r and got the same problem with the display for the 60 Hz case without the "-r" command.

Re: Monitor Real Estate

xrandr --newmode "2560x1440R"  241.50  2560 2608 2640 2720  1440 1443 1448 1481 +hsync -vsync

That mode w/ that label already exists - pelase try the modelines I posted in #12

Unfortunately, a no go.

The 60Hz ones produced the same non-detailed error: xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed

The 30Hz ones changed the output, but the monitor displayed the same dialog upon failure referenced previously where it said to change to 60Hz and that the display was going to sleep in 30s.

So I removed the xf86-video-intel package as the wiki said that was the easiest way to fallback to modesetting.

Checked xrandr to make sure the intel driver failed to load which it did.

Tried the various combinations of the modes provided for that 2560x1440 resolution and got the same issues. The 60Hz produced the cryptic "xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed" whatever that means.

And the 30Hz resolutions produced the monitor display dialog that said switch to 60Hz or the display is going to sleep in 30s.

One difference between xf86-video-intel and modesetting is the former seemed to enumerate the 2560x1440 resolution in the Display settings dialog provided by the Desktop Manager so I could set it there (resulting in dialog error message I posted before you told me to remove it), whereas the latter only showed the 1920x1080 resolution.

Re: Monitor Real Estate

One difference  [is that it] only showed the 1920x1080 resolution

Please post an updated xorg log and finally: can/have you tried the monitor w/o the KVM?

Yes, I did try without the KVM. Same responses.

[ 16.044] (II) modeset(0): clock: 295.1 MHz Image Size: 708 x 399 mm

So it finds the modeline, but doesn't add it… wtf.

    DTD 4: 2560x1440 74.924852 Hz 16:9 111.788 kHz 295.120000 MHz (708 mm x 399 mm)

                 Vfront 38 Vsync 8 Vback 6 Vpol N

This would actually be

% cvt12 2560 1440 75 -b
# 2560x1440 @ 75.000 Hz Reduced Blank (CVT) field rate 75.000 Hz; hsync: 111.900 kHz; pclk: 295.42 MHz
Modeline "2560x1440_75.00_rb2" 295.42 2560 2568 2600 2640 1440 1478 1486 1492 +hsync -vsync

so try to add that mode …

Re: Monitor Real Estate

Yeah that didn't work either.

"Detailing" what I did for self-sanity check.

xrandr --newmode "2560x1440_75.00_rb2"  295.42  2560 2568 2600 2640  1440 1478 1486 1492 +hsync -vsync
xrandr --addmode HDMI-1 2560x1440_75.00_rb2
xrandr --output HDMI-1 --mode 2560x1440_75.00_rb2

failed with the same error:

xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed

Re: Monitor Real Estate

What laptop model is this?
BIOS update available?
Did you check BIOS options for any gfx limitations? Memory reservation, fixed/native resolution only, etc.

DELL Inspiron 3593
I don't see any gfx limitations although I don't know where that would be shown. It just says the native resolution is 1920x1080 and the Video Memory is 64 MB.
Video controller is Intel(R) UHD Graphics
There does appear to be a BIOS update. I have 1.13 on the DELL website, it appears to be 1.19.
I don't know if that will "uncap" the native resolution.

Re: Monitor Real Estate

According to dell that's HDMI 1.4b and the standard as well as the IGP is perfectly cabable of the offered 1440p (let alone on reduced blanking)

Possible problems:
1. cable
2. cable
3. cable
4. The output (monitor) itself
5. cable
6. BIOS bug
7. cable
8. cable
9. cable
