Did you verify that those environment variables are set by the login shell?
How do you start KDE, using a Display Manager or manually using startx?
If you use a DM, perhaps KDE now starts using the Wayland session after the update?
If you verify that KDE runs on Xorg, try putting those environment variables in ~/.xsession instead and see if it works.
If you're unsure about all of the above, try using /etc/environment to set those variables, it might fix it.
If nothing works, you can try to check what update caused it to break, if you can identify it, it would be easier to find the issue and possibly report an upstream bug if there is one.
If you can't fix it and nothing works, you can always try fcitx5 and see if the issue persists there, it's been quite reliable for me.
