Laptop lid closed can't boot/shutdown/reboot black screen

I have a XPS 15 9500. Everything works fine except when I keep the lid closed and boot/shutdown/reboot the system. I get a blackscreen when I open the lid and the fans go crazy. I had to long press the power button to force the thing off as I can't get into tty or anything.

Here is what I have tried:
1. adding `acpi=off` in kernel parameters
2. adding `HandleLidSwitch=ignore` in `logind.conf`
3. adding `IgnoreLid=true` in `upower.conf`
4. disabling lid switch in bios

Now everytime when I start my laptop, I had to open the lid, wait for it to boot, then re-close the lid to start working which is very annoying. Any help would be appretiated thanks.
