mocp: buffer overflow detected; core dumped

This happens on two different systems. Upgrading the systems didn't fix it.

Running

mocp

crashes and gives me

*** buffer overflow detected ***: terminated
                                            Aborted (core dumped)

Worth noting, on one of the systems, mplayer and blender also crash with similar messages.

I don't know where to begin troubleshooting this. Everything I've found on the internet related to core dumps is about a programmer's issue. Help appreciate.

A buffer overflow is a "programmer's issue" - possibly improper locale handling (just a hunch)
