Hi,
I'm completly new in arch and I have no more ideas about installing a driver for my graphics card.
I'm using Intel Corporation TigerLake-LP GT2 [Iris Xe Graphics]
I followed the instructions on the arch intel graphics installation guide and also made sure that nomodeset is not set as a kernel parameter. And everything seems to work, also the driver seems to work, but when I want to run a game, for example minecraft (but it happen with any other game too), the game is lagging and the task manager is telling me that the game is using 90 to 100% of the cpu. So I think that the graphic card is not being used.
lspci -v is giving me this output:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation TigerLake-LP GT2 [Iris Xe Graphics] (rev 01) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

Capabilities: [200] Address Translation Service (ATS)
Capabilities: [300] Page Request Interface (PRI)

Kernel driver in use: i915
Does anyone has an idea what the problem can be or where I can find a hint what the problem is.
Thanks a lot
P.S. If I'm missing any information please tell me and I will add them.

Could be many things, but let's start with basics.
Please post outputs of
$ glxinfo -B #comes with mesa-utils
$ pacman -Qs intel
Also post xorg log, see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General
Welcome to archlinux forums
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

X is falling back to software rendering.
remove xf86-video-intel , restart X (or reboot) and post fresh xorg log.
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

I also tested if the CPU still runs at 100% when I open a game and it still happens.

Looking ok, just the performance warning from vulkaninfo requires action .
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … ce_support
configure early kms and set that parameter.
(early KMS has many advantages and almost no disadvantages).

ok, so I added the i915 parameter to the mkinitcpio.conf:
MODULES=(ext4 i915)
and then regenerate all existing presets with
# mkinitcpio -P
but it looks like nothing has changed as a result. The warning from vulkaninfo still appears and the CPU is still running at full speed when I open a game.

Hi thanks,
so i typed the line
sysctl dev.i915.perf_stream_paranoid=0
into the terminal and then checked if the warning still appears - it vanished -
so I created the following file
/etc/sysctl.d/99-sysctl.conf
with the line
dev.i915.perf_stream_paranoid=0
to preserve changes between reboots. That worked. Thank you.
But when I open a game it still laggs and cpu is running full.

Does "a game" tell you anything about which renderer it uses? Console errors? Is "a game" typically "steam"? What about https://archlinux.org/packages/community/x86_64/warsow/ ?
glxinfo32 -B
Also https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Benchmarking#Graphics - the CPU might not necessarrily be used for the graphics but to mine bitcoins or whatnot.
Offline
Sry for the late response it took me a bit time to get the information together and understand them. So with "a game" is meant Minecraft via TLauncher, I also tried the minecraft launcher but it makes no difference.
So I looked at the benchmarking site and installed glxgears, GpuTest and mangoHUD - thank you for that hint. I will show in the following the mangoHUD results because I think that the results show best what the problem is.
So I tried mangoHud with three different games.
Minecraft
Risen3 via Steam
warsow
I have displayed the CPU usage and the GPU usage during the game.
Minecrafts used 100% CPU and 0%GPU
Risen3 used 100% CPU and 0% GPU
Warsow.used 50% CPU and 0% GPU
First I tried Warsow without MangoHud and the game ran smoothly. So I tried again with MangoHud to see if the GPU is used in this game. However, the GPU usage was also 0% here and CPU was between 30 and 50%. So I think the game probably just doesn't need that many resources. So I think my first assumption that the GPU is not used was correct. Now I'm stumped again and don't know where to look to find out why this is happening and what information could be useful to share.
But here is the output of
glxinfo32 -B

If you run "gloss" from mesa-demos, does that tax your CPU?
Offline
Not really it uses 1-5% of the CPU. GPU again is not used.
Offline
The process or the system?
I'm not sure that the GPU use display is reliable…
Offline
oh sry, yes the process. I run "gloss" together with mangoHud again which is listing the usage of the process.

Does the CPU load vary w/ the window size?
(Don't measure resizing, give it some time after changing the size)

I am uncertain how reliable mangohud is as gpu monitor, but know an application that sofar never failed to stress videocards and get their fans running :
Please install and run it (source download is 1.5 Gib, you may need some patience) .
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

No resizing didn't had an effect on the CPU load. It was nearly the same. Between 1-5%. At least that's what MangoHUD says.
unigine-superposition .
Please install and run it
So I installed and run it.
I used the Medium preset because when I chooses High it said it wouldn't work because the VRAM is to small. It needs 3320 MB and I have 3072 MB.
So here are the Result from the Medium Run:
1080P Medium
FPS: Min 2.48, AVG 3.47, Max 4.38
Settings:
Version 1.1
Graphics API: OpenGL
Resolution: 1920 x 1080
Fullscreen: Enabled
Shaders: Medium
Textures: Medium
DOF : enabled
Motion Blur: enabled
Configuration:
CPU: Intel 11th Gen Corei7-11370H @3300 MHz (Stock) / 3369 MHz (Actual)
RAM: 15GB
GPU: Intel Iris Xe Graphics 3 GB (TigerLake-LP GT2)
Driver: i915 OpenGL 4.6
OS: Arch Linux kernel 5.17.1-arch1-1

Compare the cpu load to
LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 gloss
Offline
LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 gloss
with this the CPU load is around 50%
Offline
Ie. you're normally running on the GPU - 1%-5% for gloss is rather much.
Does the CPU speed up (at least when things get more demanding)?

I started with run the CPU at the minimum frequency with
cpupower frequency-set -g powersave
when I monitor the cpu speed in real time with:
watch cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu[0-9]*/cpufreq/scaling_cur_freq
its varies between 500000 - 1000000
when I look at the the ouput of:
cpupower frequency-info
analyzing CPU 0:
driver: intel_pstate
CPUs which run at the same hardware frequency: 0
CPUs which need to have their frequency coordinated by software: 0
maximum transition latency: Cannot determine or is not supported.
hardware limits: 400 MHz - 4.80 GHz
available cpufreq governors: performance powersave
current policy: frequency should be within 400 MHz and 4.80 GHz.
The governor "powersave" may decide which speed to use
within this range.
current CPU frequency: Unable to call hardware
current CPU frequency: 892 MHz (asserted by call to kernel)
boost state support:
Supported: yes
Active: yes
so here the current CPU frequency is around 892 MHz
now, when I run:
LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 gloss
the current frequency decreases to around
current CPU frequency: 614 MHz (asserted by call to kernel)
if I additionally start minecraft then the current frequency decreases even further
current CPU frequency: 479 MHz (asserted by call to kernel)
___________________________________________________________________
After that i ran the CPU at the maximum frequency with
cpupower frequency-set -g performance
when I monitor the cpu speed in real time with:
watch cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu[0-9]*/cpufreq/scaling_cur_freq
its varies between 500 000 up to 3 400 500
when I look at the the ouput of:
cpupower frequency-info
analyzing CPU 0:
driver: intel_pstate
CPUs which run at the same hardware frequency: 0
CPUs which need to have their frequency coordinated by software: 0
maximum transition latency: Cannot determine or is not supported.
hardware limits: 400 MHz - 4.80 GHz
available cpufreq governors: performance powersave
current policy: frequency should be within 400 MHz and 4.80 GHz.
The governor "performance" may decide which speed to use
within this range.
current CPU frequency: Unable to call hardware
current CPU frequency: 2.01 GHz (asserted by call to kernel)
boost state support:
Supported: yes
Active: yes
so here the current CPU frequency is around 2.00 GHz
now, when I run:
LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 gloss
the current frequency decreases to around
current CPU frequency: 670 MHz (asserted by call to kernel)
if I additionally start minecraft then the current frequency decreases even further
current CPU frequency: 400 MHz (asserted by call to kernel)

So the behavior is the same no matter whether with the minimum or maximum frequency.
But that seems strange to me in any case
I have also observed that when the frequency is set on the maximum frequency with
cpupower frequency-set -g performance
then minecraft runs much smoother and doesn't use that much CPU.
And btw. thank you so much for helping me. I'm learning alot.

The values for unigine-superposition clarify the gpu is used, but performs badly.
I do agree with seth power management should be looked at.
Checking the intel specific energy performance settings may be useful,
