Last update somehow reset "/etc/locale.gen"

Hi

I couldn't log in after the last update, GDM would freeze after entering password, so that I could not even switch to a TTY and had to reboot.
After trying a couple times, I rebooted and went straight to a TTY, and there were scores of error messages in journalctl complaining about not finding the default locale. I managed to login to an X session (default is wayland), and was greeted with "you've logged in with a new language, to you want to change default folder names (e.g. Home/Pictures etc...)".
The wayland session still froze, so I switched back to a TTY and inspected "/etc/locale.gen" and indeed all languages were commented out. I uncommented US and my default, generated the locales and I can now login properly.

Any idea what could cause that ? I did a full upgrade (first update in about 2 weeks) and updated a couple AUR packages as well.

Thanks !

Re: Last update somehow reset "/etc/locale.gen"

Are you running something to try to automatically handle .pacnew files? A glibc version update would have created one.

Re: Last update somehow reset "/etc/locale.gen"

Hi thanks, no just running pacdiff after updates. There was no pacnew after this update.

Strange thing, I just rebooted and now login crashes again…

[edit]
Apparently disabling Gnome extensions fixes it. I can't figure out the link between this and locale.gen though....

Re: Last update somehow reset "/etc/locale.gen"

Do you have some kind of automatic backup system that could be screwing with it?

Re: Last update somehow reset "/etc/locale.gen"

Sorry, my post wasn’t very clear, locale.gen is not being reset anymore. Gnome hangs in the same way it did if I enable extensions though.

I’m going to revert to a previous snapshot, check locale.gen, then do the full update again. I had errors related to locales while updating so I’m thinking maybe locale.gen was already borked and that messed with the update in different places.

[edit]
Updating to Gnome 42 seems to have solved the login problem, I can enable extensions again.
As for locale.gen... I guess it will remain a mystery
