Does GIMP need to be built with a GVFS requirement?

Hi!

Ubuntu and Debian build GiMP with GVFS as a suggested package for remote file access, not a requirement like Arch Linux currently has it.

I just figure that if something really isn't necessary, it should be optional, partly since it uses up resources on my old, cheap laptop :-).

Thanks!

No. The dependency was added just recently, the package builds and runs fine without it (so long as you don't try to open remote images via http).
