I have a HP Officejet 52** printer I want to use in gnome 42.
It did not work out of the box.
So I read some of https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/CUPS
I installed cups. I also installed gutenprint and foomatic-db-gutenprint-ppds.
Then I enabled cups.socket and started it.
It is a wireless printer that is connected to the wifi and in gnome -> settings -> printer -> add printer it shows up.
If I click add it says
additional printer driver required
For gutenprint the website says Officejet 520 is supported, not 52**.

I didn't but it told me I need hplip instead of what I installed for my drivers.
So I installed hplip instead.
Still gnome could not add the printer and CUPS did not display it in http://localhost:631/admin
Gnome said "additional printer drivers are required" "printer could not be added"
I set CUPS loglevel to debug

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/CUPS/T … ing_issues
It said to install system-config-printer and starting it. That worked.
Now its listed in CUPS and in gnome and prints and scans. Weird
I did not use the hplip setup from your article though and don't think I should because I don't want the same printer listed 2 times.
$ hp-setup -ucould also have worked.
