[SOLVED]Screen flickering when cursor is in top of the screen area

Laptop: Ideapad Slim 7i Pro
WM: Qtile
Intel driver: Intel® Evo Platform Powered by 11th Gen Intel® Core i7-11370H Processor
Integrated Intel® Iris Xᵉ Graphics

When I am using my WM and my cursor is placed in the top third of the screen's real estate, the screen stuttersflickers. This doesn't seem to happen when I am in controlling terminals. I assume it's because I am not using the cursor and it isn't a GUI.

[This seems like a similar issue. So I am sharing my driver information](https://arcolinuxforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=2984)

From the thread, they mention that it could be due to the intel driver.

Note: Some (Debian & Ubuntu, Fedora, KDE) recommend not installing the xf86-video-intel driver, and instead falling back on the modesetting driver for Gen4 and newer GPUs (GMA 3000 from 2006 and newer). See [1], [2], Xorg#Installation, and modesetting(4). However, the modesetting driver can cause problems such as Chromium Issue 370022 and vsync jitter/video stutter in mpv.

After uninstalling xf86-video-intel, nothing changed. It continues to stutter.

Any ideas?

What?

After uninstalling xf86-video-intel, nothing changed. It continues to stutter.

Post your xorg log, notably since the arcolinux thread mentions no-mode-set (ie. nomodeset w/ two idiotic dashes) what will get you the vesa or fbdev driver.

Also please elaborate on "the screen stutters", what exactly does that mean?
There recently was a thread where the HW cursor caused artifacts due to an overscan compensation.

Re: [SOLVED]Screen flickering when cursor is in top of the screen area

Thanks for the reply Seth. After reading that thread you shared, I realised that my issue is called "screen tearing" after playing a video and seeing the clear horizontal lines. Until then, it just felt like my cursor was "stuttering" around the top third of the screen but I didn't realise this was the real issue.

Here is my log however:

Looks like this is part of the problem. Will solve it later but got to jump off.

Re: [SOLVED]Screen flickering when cursor is in top of the screen area

That's not a "real" error and irrelevant to your situation.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_graphics#Tearing
Do you use a compositor (eg. picom, xcompmgr) next to qtile?

Re: [SOLVED]Screen flickering when cursor is in top of the screen area

Reinstalled xf86-video-intel. Edit: Not sure if this is a good idea though, as it isn't recommended in the ArchWiki.

Created this file:

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

and stored the following text inside:

Section "Device"
  Identifier "Intel Graphics"
  Driver "intel"
  Option "TearFree" "true"
EndSection

Edit:
I added the line

Option "SWcursor" "true"

but it didn't solve the problem.

Unfortunately the problem persists.

I do have picom installed. I don't have any compositor packages installed.

Edit: Starting Qtile in Wayland doesn't seem to resolve the issue.

Re: [SOLVED]Screen flickering when cursor is in top of the screen area

Do you think you can upload a video (record your monitor w/ your phone or so) of the effect?

Re: [SOLVED]Screen flickering when cursor is in top of the screen area

The problem doesn't appear when I use a screencasting package (simplescreenrecorder).

Here is a video I recorded on my phone: https://youtube.com/shorts/xSZ8SyhjunY?feature=share

Note: I had to reinstall xf86-video-intel to get qtile to start using xorg

Re: [SOLVED]Screen flickering when cursor is in top of the screen area

That's not screen tearing.
1. make sure that this doesn't happen w/ eg. openbox
2. Disable https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … nable_fbc)
3. Disable https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … flickering
4. Disable https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … RI3_issues

I had to reinstall xf86-video-intel to get qtile using xorg

Stale xorg configlet in /{etc,usr/share}/X11/xorg.conf.d that references the intel driver?
