[SOLVED] NetworkManager is unable to connect to some networks

Hello, this is my first time posting so I'll try to do my best to explain my problem.

Since some time ago (not sure exactly when) NetworkManager started having trouble connecting to certain networks such as my phone hotspot or my school network and some others. When I attempt to connect, NM prompts me to enter a password, then processes it for a while and prompts me again, then processes it again and asks me a final time before dropping the connection. It can connect to my home network without any issues though. It was also able to connect to an unsecured library network and a 2GHz band of a different network.

I tried some common solutions like
- restarting the NM service
- checking whether the card was hard blocked
- making sure NM was the only networking service running (or at least I am pretty sure it is)

but the problem persists.

Here is my jounrnalctl -f when I try to connect to my iPhone hotspot using NM:

I am not sure whether this means that NM is the definite culprit, but it seems like it's not a hardware problem. Again I am very new to posting here so if there's any info that I missed that's needed here I'm happy to provide it.

Honestly after a full day of trying to fix this I'm stumped. Any help at all is appreciated smile

Re: [SOLVED] NetworkManager is unable to connect to some networks

The journal snippet shows a wpa_supplicant w/ a lower PID than NM

find /etc/systemd -type l -exec test -f {} \; -print | awk -F'/' '{ printf ("%-40s | %s\n", $(NF-0), $(NF-1)) }' | sort -f

Other than that, try to disable https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Networ … domization

Re: [SOLVED] NetworkManager is unable to connect to some networks

Tried disabling randomization during scanning, but no luck there.

Here is the output of the command you gave:

Re: [SOLVED] NetworkManager is unable to connect to some networks

Ok after searching around a bit a suspect this might have to do with the type of encryption used by the networks. For example the difference between my iPhone hotspot and home network seems to be that the hotspot has WPA2/WPA3 enabled whereas my home network only has WPA2. I tried editing my hotspot connection profile to only use WPA3 (using the NM gui applet) and now my iPhone acknowledges that there is a connection. However NM still seems unable to connect and the same behavior persists.

Here is my journalctl -f when I tried connecting with the WPA3 profile (although I think it's still the same info):

AFAIU this means it settled on WPA2 (what's in that hotspot.conf regarding auth?), so I would try also setting NM to WPA2 only, rather than WPA3 only. And do you know if other problematic networks also use WPA3?

Re: [SOLVED] NetworkManager is unable to connect to some networks

It seems like I managed to fix the problem (hope it stays that way) after switching the NM wifi backend from wpa_supplicant to iwd. Still no idea what the original problem was... maybe iwd works better since I have an intel network card, but I honestly don't know.

For future reference here was the "hotspot.conf" file I used for my manual wpa_supplicant connection (I edited out the real password):

ctrl_interface=/run/wpa_supplicant
ap_scan=1

network={
        ssid="JJ iPhone 8 (black)"
        psk="password"
        key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
}

Thanks for the help everyone smile
