VirtualBox installation: vboxdrv module not found

Hi, I'm trying to install VirtualBox with this tutorial: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Virtua … inux_hosts
I'm running into the issue that I can't load the vboxdrv or any other vbox kernel module because the kernel modules are installed in the wrong folder somehow. More on that later.
Here is precisely what I've done so far:

# pacman -S virtualbox-host-modules-arch virtualbox-guest-iso
# pacman -S linux-headers
# reboot

After the reboot I get the following error when trying to load a module

# modprobe vboxdrv
modprobe: FATAL: Module vboxdrv not found in directory /lib/modules/5.17.3-arch1-1

When looking into the /lib/modules folder I find:

# pacman -Ql linux-headers | grep vbox
linux-headers /usr/lib/modules/5.17.5-arch1-1/build/drivers/gpu/drm/vboxvideo/
linux-headers /usr/lib/modules/5.17.5-arch1-1/build/drivers/gpu/drm/vboxvideo/Kconfig
linux-headers /usr/lib/modules/5.17.5-arch1-1/build/drivers/virt/vboxguest/
linux-headers /usr/lib/modules/5.17.5-arch1-1/build/drivers/virt/vboxguest/Kconfig
linux-headers /usr/lib/modules/5.17.5-arch1-1/build/fs/vboxsf/
linux-headers /usr/lib/modules/5.17.5-arch1-1/build/fs/vboxsf/Kconfig
linux-headers /usr/lib/modules/5.17.5-arch1-1/build/include/linux/vbox_utils.h
linux-headers /usr/lib/modules/5.17.5-arch1-1/build/include/uapi/linux/vbox_err.h
linux-headers /usr/lib/modules/5.17.5-arch1-1/build/include/uapi/linux/vbox_vmmdev_types.h
linux-headers /usr/lib/modules/5.17.5-arch1-1/build/include/uapi/linux/vboxguest.h

# pacman -Q linux
linux 5.17.3.arch1-1

# uname -r
5.17.3-arch1-1

Ok so I understand the issue. Somehow the wrong version of vbox linux headers is installed. But why? I found a temporary fix: renaming the folders to my current kernel version. But this only works till the next kernel update.

Is there a better solution?

Re: VirtualBox installation: vboxdrv module not found

Partial upgrades are unsupported. Update your entire system, then reboot, your linux package needs to match the headers version and should thus be also a variant of 5.17.5

IF the reason you are holding back your linux package is that other stuff breaks, then likely your bootloader configuration is broken. As it stands with the output you posted you are on a partially updated system.

Re: VirtualBox installation: vboxdrv module not found

Thank you that did the trick. I will read more into that smile

For others with the same issue:
# pacman -Syu
# reboot
