Audio settings reset every restart

So, i have been having this problem for about a week now. when i open youtube, the video does not play unless i go to my sound settings and change my audio output (analog stereo 7.1) to something else, only for it to reset next restart along with my other volume settings. (the output option does stay, but unless i change it again it does not play any audio

Re: Audio settings reset every restart

you need to set a fallback device (default) or turn off the device you dont want to use.

in pavucontrol go to the configuration tab and set "profile" to "off" for the device you DONT want to use, OR on the "output devices" tab set the device you want as fallback (button with green tick on it)

or if you use pulsemixer, on the "F3" tab turn off the device you DONT want to use, OR on the "F1" tab set the device you want as the default.

Re: Audio settings reset every restart

i've no output with that command

I would like to recap what has been happening to me for a few weeks:

If I start my PC and try to play YouTube, the window stays black and loading.
If I try to play a video locally, the same happens (some plater black, some crash).
If I enter the GNOME audio settings, I enable and disable the output, I hear a click in the headphones and the audio starts, the various videos locals/YouTube also start.

If I close the screen with the audio settings everything goes back to not working.

The only way to continue to have audio is to set / reset the output and leave the GNOME/Preferences audio settings window open.

I have an SMSL M3 USB DAC connected with a headset that I have been using with Arch for many years without ever having a problem.

i have also multiple proesses of same application volume..

Re: Audio settings reset every restart

After hours of trying i got around the problem by replacing pulseaudio with pipewire by installing pipewire-pulse.

Now everything works fine

Re: Audio settings reset every restart

Did you have pipewire-media-session or wireplumber already installed? Symptoms and resolution sound like what happens if you've installed the latter without doing a complete switch over to pipewire, as wireplumber will lock the devices for itself.

Re: Audio settings reset every restart

I have wireplumber.
That was probably the problem then.

It was recently installed during an update:

[2022-04-21T20:05:57+0200] [ALPM] installed wireplumber (0.4.9-1)
[2022-04-21T20:05:57+0200] [ALPM] installed python-dbusmock (0.27.3-1)
[2022-04-21T20:05:57+0200] [ALPM] removed pipewire-media-session (1:0.4.1-1)

So if I removed wireplumber I could reinstall pulseaudio I guess.

Thanks for this... audio did not work in GNOME after

[2022-05-10T14:37:04-0400] [ALPM] installed wireplumber (0.4.10-2)

Apparently it was installed to satisfy new dependency gst-plugin-pipewire -> wireplumber.

After I removed both and rebooted, sound in GNOME came back.

Thanks for the hints!

Re: Audio settings reset every restart

More people is affected and as fabrixx mentioned, installing pipewire-pulse can fix it.
