Hi,
I have been fighting for hours trying to get my machine to load the tdfxfb module for my secondary video card. When I type modprobe tdfxfb it freezes completely. I've tried having modprobe send a log to syslog but no errors are reported there. The module does exist, modprobe finds it, but the system just locks when I try to install it. System freezes at LOADING MODULES if I set rc.conf to load tdfxfb on boot. Currently I have MOD_AUTOLOAD="no" in rc.conf, system hangs at boot otherwise.
I can load other modules with modprobe just fine. Any ideas?

try running
hwd -e
Are you sure your second card requires tdfxfb? Assuming the video card is not onboard, you could try moving it another slot.

Hi,
Yes, I am sure that this is the required module. I have a working gentoo system on a different partition which uses tdfxfb as the module for that card and xorg/xinerama works perfectly in that system.
#hwdetect --show-video

What kernel are you running on arch, and what kernel are you running in gentoo?

I am running 2.6.18 under Arch, and have tried with both the Arch 2.6.18 and a vanilla 2.6.18. Under gentoo I am running 2.6.16. I haven't yet had time to try installing the module in 2.6.16 under arch, I was hoping I could resolve this issue without a kernel rollback. I did a quick search of the linux kernel newsgroup but did not find any reports that there is a problem with tdfxfb and 2.6.18. Moreover, 2.6.18 gives people the option to compile (experimental) 3D support for the card I am trying to use. I have tried installing the module with this option both enabled and disabled, and it works with neither.
