Blurry graphics generally across multiple applications. Clueless.

As the title states, I'm getting blurry graphics (on a seemingly selective basis) across many applications. Youtube videos are blurry, graphics in firefox (and chromium) are blurry, dosbox console text is blurry… I've uploaded screenshots as examples below, with red arrows pointing to areas where this problem is most noticeable:

I don't know if this is an X problem, a driver problem, or what… I believe it started happening after a system upgrade although sadly my amnesia episodes of late make that unconfirmable.

According to `lspci -v', I have only one VGA controller, an NVIDIA card:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GT216GLM [Quadro FX 880M] (rev a2) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
        Subsystem: Dell Device 040c
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 28
        Memory at e2000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]
        Memory at d0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
        Memory at e0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=32M]
        I/O ports at 7000 [size=128]
Expansion ROM at 000c0000 [disabled] [size=128K]
        Capabilities: <access denied>
        Kernel driver in use: nouveau
        Kernel modules: nouveau

…which shows that I'm using the nouveau driver (which I don't understand, because the nouveau driver isn't installed (`pacman -S xf86-video-nouveau' reports that it isn't installed). I'm really scratching my head here and would like some help thanks.

Re: Blurry graphics generally across multiple applications. Clueless.

You're using the nouveau kernel module, GT216GLM is a tesla chip and only supported by the 340xx proprietary drivers (which will probably not work w/ X11)

Please post your xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

Re: Blurry graphics generally across multiple applications. Clueless.

You're running the modesetting driver on top of nouveau, GLX works (no software rendering)
You could try to
1. use xf86-video-nouveau
2.

xrandr --dpi 142

The latter will typically only apply to processes started afterwards (the server is at 96DPI but the physical resolution is ~142DPI)
3. disable DRI3, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … RI3_issues (you can ignore the intel context, this applies to the X11 nouveau driver as well)

Re: Blurry graphics generally across multiple applications. Clueless.

Sigh.

Okay now I'm having this exact problem on another laptop with an Intel card. On the last laptop, I didn't try all of your suggestions, seth, because I was starting to doubt I could get things working with it. But I figured for sure an Intel chip would work fine with X11. Wrong…same blurry stuff everywhere.

here's `lspci -v':

seth: I tried your solutions 2 and 3 on this new laptop. `xrandr --dpi 142' did nothing and disabling DRI3 made X unable to start (no screen found error). Disabling modesetting also didn't work.

Any further ideas? This doesn't seem to be a chip-specific issue at this point. Appreciated.

Re: Blurry graphics generally across multiple applications. Clueless.

`xrandr --dpi 142' did nothing and disabling DRI3 made X unable to start (no screen found error). Disabling modesetting also didn't work.

As mentioned, the DPI change will only affect processes started afterwards.
Please post an xorg log for the failign server w/ DRI3 supposingly disabled.

You cannot disable modesetting. The point is to switch between modesetting and ddx driver
You're currently running on xf86-video-intel what results in software GL because of

[ 168.041] (EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib/dri/i965_dri.so failed (/usr/lib/dri/i965_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)
[ 168.041] (EE) AIGLX error: unable to load driver i965
[ 170.604] (II) IGLX: Loaded and initialized swrast
[ 170.605] (II) GLX: Initialized DRISWRAST GL provider for screen 0

so you want to drop that driver no matter what.

Obviously the video source might just be blurry/low res.
Try mpv + yt-dlp or youtube-viewer (also to see what resolution is actually available/used)

nB. that you're now on 1366x768 - the phyical dimensions or an edid aren't listed in the log ("xrandr -q"?) so it's not clear what the physical resolution is at this point. But you're not running FullHD videos for sure.

The only thing that looks like a rendering issue for sure is dosbox
