Cannot start gnome with xorg, only wayland works

I cannot launch gnome with xorg - when i type in the password, the screen goes black for a split second and goes back to the login screen. I have the package xorg-drivers installed, and Wayland works perfectly fine - but I need xorg for screensharing.
My /var/log/xdm.log states that ,,no screens are found."

Both logs are vastly dated.

I cannot launch gnome with xorg - when i type in the password

How exactly do you start X11? What DM do you use? GDM?

Re: Cannot start gnome with xorg, only wayland works

Yeah, GDM. I start it by using the menu in the right bottom corner, regular GNOME loads fine while GNOME (Xorg) does what i described above.
Also sorry for the dated logs, didnt notice hmm

Re: Cannot start gnome with xorg, only wayland works

GDM stores the log in the system journal.

As for the posted log: some config file references 5 GPUs, there're only 2 in the system, the nvidia DDX driver is tried so the kernel module is in use?) but not available…
=> You first and foremost need to get rid of the bogus config file and configure the hybrid system properly, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA_Optimus

grep -r iGPU /{etc,usr/share}/X11/xorg.conf*

i should remove the xf86-video-fbdev package

Yes (you hardly want to use that)

to fix the ,,framebuffer mode" issue

No. The fbdev driver isn't even referenced by the log.

Re: Cannot start gnome with xorg, only wayland works

Just wanted to mention, i don't even have a nvidia gpu, both my integrated and dedicated gpu are amd and i have no idea why do i have nvidia related files on my system - im not as experienced as i thought i am xD
The grep command printed this:

/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia.conf: Screen 0 "iGPU" 0 0
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia.conf: Identifier "iGPU"
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia.conf: Identifier "iGPU"

/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia.conf: Identifier "iGPU"

Should i remove those? Or the file itself?

Re: Cannot start gnome with xorg, only wayland works

Probably the file itself.
If that doesn't help, post an updated xorg log and the output of "lspci".

Removing 10-nvidia.conf from /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d helped big_smile
Thanks for helping out! I really have no idea how it got here though xD

Did you keep (just move) it? The header might say. It looks a bit like sth. optimus-manager and the likes would have created.

Please always remember to mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.
Thanks.
