ogg files don't have an assigned icon

A couple of days ago I noticed ogg files are displayed with a blank icon instead of their own. I checked if for some reason the icon was erased, or someting happened to my icon theme, but everything looks fine. All other type of files show correctly, it's only ogg files.

What desktop environment are you using?  What are you using as a file explorer?

Looks okay here on Plasma using Dolphin.

Aside from ewaller’s questions: did you assign some icon manually and it was an icon you did not explicitly provide yourself? Icons in themes change and are sometimes removed. And so may be packages installed as dependencies. For example recently adwaita-icon-theme removed some icons, which led to icons missing in Xfce menus for people using that theme.

Re: ogg files don't have an assigned icon

I'm using Mate with Caja.
And didn't assign any custom icon; I'm using Obsidian theme, which I manually installed, and as I said I cheked it just in case something wrong happened to it, but I can't see anything wrong.
Is is possible to manually assign a mime icon?

EDIT: ok, I have more information. It's not only that they have no icon asigned, if I try to open them it says there's no application associated to run them...

Re: ogg files don't have an assigned icon

Not using Mate or Caja, so I’m responding based on my general knowledge, using somewhat similar Xfce, and google-fu.

Mate should have settings for setting MIME associations. In Xfce it’s in Settings → Default Applications. It seems Mate has that as “Preferred Applications” in its settings (mate-control-center). If not, search for term “mime” in the search box of Mate settings. You should be able to associate a MIME type with an application.

Under the hood it’s controlled by Shared MIME Info and MIME applications associations. So you should able to query and manipulate the database even without Mate, using xdg-mime command (xdg-mime manual, relavant Arch Wiki article). This way is a bit more complicated, but that’s complexity arising from the the very nature of the problem.

I have one more thought and it’s worth asking. Did that happen to files, which had icons and apps associated earlier, or are those new files? Are you sure those are actually ogg containers in the first place? And, if they are, you had associations for their content before?⁽¹⁾ What’s the output of:

file --brief --mime "$YOUR_FILE"
xdg-mime query filetype "$YOUR_FILE"

____
⁽¹⁾ For containers, file types often describe the content type, not the container itself. So for example they will be categorized as vorbis-inside-ogg, not simply ogg.

Yes, those files worked perfectly before and no changes were made to their functioning whatsoever.
Unfortunately mate-settings has no option for mime types.
As for those commands, the first one brings up:

audio/ogg; charset=binary

And the second one:

application/x-extension-ogg

Re: ogg files don't have an assigned icon

What is the output of:

xdg-mime query default audio/ogg
xdg-mime query default audio/x-vorbis+ogg
xdg-mime query default application/x-extension-ogg

(report any empty responses too)

Sorry for the delay, been out:

xdg-mime query default audio/ogg outputs:
vlc.desktop

xdg-mime query default audio/x-vorbis+ogg outputs
vlc.desktop

xdg-mime query default application/x-extension-ogg does not output anything.

Re: ogg files don't have an assigned icon

Okay, more information: I changed the icon theme, which is something I just didn't think about for some reason, and nope, still ogg files have no icon assigned.
