Unable to install Arch, Mediatek MT7921 issue [SOLVED]

Hi everybody,

I am trying to install Arch (May edition) on an Asus M7600QE-L2007X laptop, that has an AMD Ryzen 7 processor and a GeForce RTX 3050 graphic card, with Win 11 pre-installed (I tried to order it without Win preinstalled, but that was not possible). I have disabled Fast boot in the BIOS and immediately after the device boots I get

 # ip link
1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN mode DEFULT group default qlen 1000
3: wlan0: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue state DOWN mode DORMANT group default qlen 1000
        link/ether 90:e8:68:3f:db:8b brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

# iwctl

returns

NetworkConfigurationEnabled: disabled
StateDirectory: /var/lib/iwd
Version: 1.27

I can not set up the network card. Then, rfkill returns

# rfkill list all

0: hci0: Bluetooth
              Soft blocked: no
              Hard blocked: no
1: asus-wlan: Wireless LAN
               Soft blocked: no
               Hard blocked: no
2: asus-bluetooth: Bluetooth
              Soft blocked: no
              Hard blocked: no
3: phy0: Wireless LAN
              Soft blocked: no
              Hard blocked: no

In addition, lspci returns

# lspci -nnks 2:
02:00.0 0280: 14c3: 7961
                 Subsystem: 1a3b: 4680
                 Kernel driver in use: mt7921e
                 Kernel modules: mt7921e, wl

If I try

# ip link set wlan0 up

nothing happens, the card is not up.

On the other hand

# ifconfig wlan0 up

returns

ifconfig will not execute and completion _ifconfig exists

I have returned in December 2021 an Asus Vivobook Pro M3500QC with a Mediatek 7961 network card, due to the fact that it had the same problem. It took 5 months until I got this new laptop. And I am in the same point.

Is there any way to solve this problem and install the system? I'm stuck roll.
Thank you for your help.

Best wishes,
Bogdan

Take a look if the firmware is present:

# dmesg | grep -i firmware

I can not set up the network card.

Did the iwctl interactive session end after that output?  If not,  what commands did you try from the interactive prompt and what outputs did it produce?

3: wlan0: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue state DOWN mode DORMANT group default qlen 1000

This is a perfectly good "UP" state without an established connection. The wiki even mentions that.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Wlan#A … _interface

Since you are trying to use iwctl / iwd, here is the wiki page for that: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Iwctl#iwctl

Re: Unable to install Arch, Mediatek MT7921 issue [SOLVED]

"LOWER_UP" is still unset and "NO-CARRIER' is set. This could be a Layer1 switch (literally, look if you have a h/w button on your device) or something else (e.g. missing firmware).

At least my intel 8265 / 8275 shows NO_CARRIER and UP without LOWER_UP and works just fine. "iw dev wlan0 scan" as well as iwd are working. I guess there might be some automagic power saving feature doing that.

Have you tried a scan for networks yet?

Re: Unable to install Arch, Mediatek MT7921 issue [SOLVED]

I have disabled Fast boot in the BIOS and immediately after the device boots I get

That's the wrong (irrelevant) kind of fast-boot (see the 3rd link below)

I can not set up the network card.

What does that mean exactly? (see loqs' question)

If I try

# ip link set wlan0 up
nothing happens, the card is not up.

yes it is - according to your "ip addr" output.

ifconfig will not execute and completion _ifconfig exists

type ifconfig

It's most likely jst not available on the installation iso.

Fwwi, no L1 flag on my present wifi either (but it's not an mt7921e)

The iwctl session did not end.

[iwd]# station wlan0 scan
[iwd]# station wlan0 show

returns

          State disconnected
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[iwd]# station list

displays

wlan0 disconnected
[iwd] # station wlan0 get-networks

Displays the networks correctly

Yes, Seth, I did and it worked like a charm smile. Thank you! cool . It seems I was an idiot! tongue

Just one more issue please. I did not use archinstall until now. I created the first subvolume and tried to label it as "@" or "root".  Then, the first step was to mount it as "/" or "/@". After I do so, it takes me out of the archinstall script.

Every time I installed Arch I was creating subvolumes by typing

btrfs su cr /mnt/@
btrfs su cr /mnt/@home
btrfs su cr /mnt/@var
btrfs su cr /mnt/@snapshots

Can you pls tell me what am I doing wrong?

A nice WE to you all!

Start a new thread for this as it's a completely unrelated issue.
