[SOLVED (for now)] Unusable computer with Kernel 5.18

With Kernel 5.18 the PC just doesn't respond.
i3status-rust didn't show any information, no internet connection, I couldn't open any programs.
When I tried to shutdown, there were a lot of issues with process, and I have to force shutdown.

Honestly, I don't know what happened, here's journalctl log.

Edit: sorry for not mentioning it earlier. The issue persists, but with the net.ifnames=0 kernel parameter, the possibility of the problem appearing is less. The more recent log I have: kernel 6.0.11-arch1-1 journal log
I removed the kernel parameter right now (using kernel 6.1.1-arch1-1 when I wroted this edit), and the system boots fine. If this problem appears again, I'll post a journal log and ask how to debug the problem.

And again, I apologize.

Re: [SOLVED (for now)] Unusable computer with Kernel 5.18

Seems the atheros chip/disfuncitonal network.

So, throwing stuff against the wall:
- https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … acklisting ath9k (use /bin/true)
- https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Networ … face_names (for good measure and because the NIC gets renamed after NM operates it)
If the above (notably blacklisting ath9k) helps, try
- Pass "ath9k.nohwcrypt=1 ath9k.ps_enable=0" to the kernel commandline

I added module_blacklist=ath9k in kernel command line, and the computer boot fine, I can use it without problems, except obviously I can't use internet.

Adding only net.ifnames=0 to kernel parameters, doesn't work.

seth wrote:

Adding only that, same problem. Adding module_blacklist with that don't work too.

Journal log:

If I'm making any mistakes, let me know. I never did this before, so I'm very noob/dumb.

Re: [SOLVED (for now)] Unusable computer with Kernel 5.18

There's enp2s0

A sane combination would be

net.ifnames=0 ath9k.nohwcrypt=1 ath9k.ps_enable=0

If you're blacklisting the module, the other options become pointless.

The boots w/ the ath9k module have a bunch of pipwire issues,

Re: [SOLVED (for now)] Unusable computer with Kernel 5.18

I replaced wireplumber with pipewire-media-session, and try only with that. Fails: https://0x0.st/oBjm.txt

seth wrote:

net.ifnames=0 ath9k.nohwcrypt=1 ath9k.ps_enable=0

Trying this works, no issues, no pipewire problems, and I can connect to internet: https://0x0.st/oBja.txt

Now, I have 2 questions:

  • Why is this problem happenning?

  • How I add that kernel parameters only for kernel 5.18? because I have the lts too.

Wiki says editing /boot/grub/grub.cfg, but if I regenerate grub.cfg with grub-mkconfig then I will lost the changes. Adding that parameters in /etc/default/grub  adds for the two kernel versions.

Re: [SOLVED (for now)] Unusable computer with Kernel 5.18

You'll have to edit the grub.cfg manually and do so everytime after you ran grub-mkconfig, which is just a smpliefied way to create the former.

"net.ifnames=0" avoids one of lennarts brainfarts (the renaiming is race-condition prone and tends to be *less* predictable on consumer systems), there's absolutely no drawback to this on any system w/ <2 ethernet and <2 wifi NICs
As to why this is happening, see whether you can isolate which of the ath9k parameters is the crucial one.

Re: [SOLVED (for now)] Unusable computer with Kernel 5.18

Same for me with `Qualcomm Atheros AR9462`

Unfortunately only blacklist of ath9k or downgrade to 5.17 works
