[SOLVED] System Freeze after Update to kernel 5.17.*

Hey Folks,

I do have a weird issue.
As soon as I update my kernel to 5.17.* I do get a freeze of my whole system.

What's happening is a freeze as soon as I open Browsers or my IDE. The system does not respond anymore and is using one core (of four) at 100%.

Working Kernel: linux-5.16.16.arch1-1

I'm using:

• gnome-desktop 1:42.0-1

• System is running in vmware player

• xorg-server: 21.1.3-6.

As of now my workaround is to downgrade manually to kernel 5.16.16 which is still working.
I don't have a clue where to start digging in order to get any more details.

At 9:4:29 the system stops responding - unfortunately, I cannot see any hint what's breaking down.
I had it running for another 8 min until I forced rebooted the VM.

Any ideas?

Hello,
i have a similar error.
the display of my PC freezes (i cant also go to thy tty and ssh also down).
It can always recreate this by going to https://github.com/jonaburg/picom and scrolling to the video or gif.
I can only see this behavior since the update to 5.17.x. Firefox version 99.0.1 (64-bit) is used as the browser. When switching to the LTS kernel, the problem disappears and the PC no longer freezes.
This was tested many times on my productive system. I also tried different WMs (xmonad, qtile, KDE, i3) and switching the filesystem from btrfs to ext4 - but the problem remained. The PC has a SWAP. The XORG version is X.Org X Server 1.21.1.3. This Problem is also reproduceable on Wayland. I tested also by uninstall of picom and reinstall it etc.
This are my components:
Distro: Arch Linux
Resolution: 2560x1440
OS: Arch Linux x86_64
CPU: Intel i5-6600K (4) @ 4.600GHz
GPU: Intel HD Graphics 530
GPU: AMD ATI Radeon RX 480
Driver: lib32-mesa 22.0.1-3
mesa 22.0.1-3
mesa-utils 8.4.0-7

BTW, after a couple of downgrades last few weeks... it's now working with today's state:

5.18.0-arch1-1

But the resolving of the problem might be one of the many other updates as well.
