Qemu 7.0.0 always drops to a UEFI shell on several distros. [SOLVED]

I've tried to install Pop!OS 22.04 and Garuda Linux. If I don't select UEFI in the setup, I get "Booting from hard disk" and then the VM does nothing else. If I do select UEFI, the installation appears to go fine, but on the first reboot, I get dropped to a UEFI shell. I was able to install Ubuntu 22.04. Any help is appreciated!

Are you using qemu directly from cli or through some GUI frontend ?

In case of a GUI, do things work if you follow https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/QEMU#C … zed_system ?

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?

I've been using qemu through virt-manager. I'll do it from the CLI next time I'm there.

I finally remembered I needed to try to run these VM's from the CLI. I updated everything on the host using yay, rebooted, and then figured I'd try to create a VM in virt-manager and start it from the CLI. So, I created Pop! OS, exactly the same as I did earlier, and checked "Customize configuration before install", then selected UEFI in the Firmware section. the guest OS installed, which I expected and I told it to shutdown, but for some reason virt-manager decided to restart the VM and it popped up to a login screen. I also tried with Garuda as the guest OS and it also started fine.

Since I can no longer replicate the issue, and since everything is working fine for me, I'm marking this as solved.
