Hello all,
First, thanks for any help you have to give!
Set up:
Slot 1: RX580 ==> HDMI to monitor 1
Slot 2: RTX3050 ==> HDMI to monitor 2
Expected behavior:
RX580 passthrough ==> VM DE
RTX3050 ==> host DE
Actual behavior:
Both HDMI cables plugged in
RX580 passthrough ==> VM
RTX3050 ==> "Welcome to GRUB"
or
Only RTX3050 HDMI cable attached
RX580 passthrough ==> HDMI unplugged
RTX3050 ==> gdm starts up fine
Problems:
Primary Question:
What can I do to get the nvidia card to start gdm when the amdgpu is attached to the monitors? I've blacklisted amdgpu using /etc/modprobe.d/amdgpu.conf and added the vfio pci-ids=xxxx:xxxx to /etc/default/grub, regenerated grub and mkinitcpio. Thus, the RX580 is good for passthrough. Yay. The issue is that gdm doesn't start on the RTX3050. If I ssh in, nvidia-smi does run, but shows no processes and lsmod | grep nvidia shows the nvidia modules have loaded. The weird part: if I just unplug the HDMI cable from the RX580 and reboot, gdm starts up just find on the RTX3050, but I can't get signal to the monitor if I replug the RX580 after start up (and that's not a viable long term solution anyhow).
Tangential Questions:
1) Everything seems a bit slower with two GPUs attached. I have a 1000W PSU and going through the calculators online, I should be well above the required wattage. Is there some bios setting I need to manager here? It seems like the fans are constantly blowing hard on this machine with both GPUs plugged in.
2) Before working with the RTX3050, I had 2x RX580s in the case. I installed the VM and booted with the RX580 passthrough, played with a few opencore configurations, shutdown and rebooted. Halfway through the VM boot, the entire system shut off and I could smell burning (think train brakepad smell). I turned everything back on and the RX580 (a different one than I'm currently using) gave no output and the fans were on high. I don't understand how I could've roasted a GPU using vfio-passthrough. Am I missing something about the dual GPU set up here? I have each GPU plugged into the PSU on separate cables. I took the burned card apart and replaced the thermal paste (as a few posts have indicated) with no luck upon reassembly.
This project has become a huge timesink and expensive (burned a GPU!!).
I'd be grateful for any help!!
Thanks to the mods and community!
