Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello all smile

Ive been on a journey togo from an all Apple ecosystem (i’m even Apple certified) to Linux. Ive used Debian for years on servers, but i never thought it ready for desktops. However, principles have led me to look for ways to move away from the big tech. So i wanted a distro with a small footprint, yet stable and user friendly.

I think Debian and the likes are becoming too bloated. So then i looked at Alpine Linux, great distro for security reasons, but i found their community not so friendly at times, and their desktop support i had issues with too. And then i found Arch smile

I like Arch. Ive setup my own private repo with things from the AUR. And now im looking for ways to build me own simple environment with mobile support smile My dream is to one day have a phone that runs Arch, then in the office i can simply connect it to a dock (possible by bluetooth) and have it work as a full desktop environment. Then at the end of my work day i simply undock it and leave for home. This solves so many synchronisation problems, and the need to bring along multiple devices.. but these are all future dreams, for now im just learning Arch smile

You may find mobile support to be a challenge. The KDE folks have some support for Android devices that you can check out. My main system runs Arch and I use the Gnome Shell. There is very little that I still have to do on my MacBook, mainly text messaging and hands free telephone. With Arch you have the freedom to configure your system any way you like so have fun exploring the options.

Why I run Arch? To "BTW I run Arch" the guy one grade younger.
And to let my siblings and cousins laugh at Arsch Linux...

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

just want to say hi. today i finally got arch working after i learned about the "archinstall" command. i had been distro hopping for about a year.

i tried to start out with red hat Linux but it put my PC into a boot loop for 2 days but then i finally got my PC working but instead of going back to windows i decided to go to another Linux distro called solus but i only used it for about 3 days until i switched to garuda. i used garuda the longest in fact i think i used it longer than windows but for some reason i thought i should use manjaro instead because i thought that it would be better to use because it was a lot more popular at the time. then i realized that there would be no difference since they were both arch based. so i just gave up and tried to install windows but that didn't work so i went to ubunto for like an hour so i could switch to windows more easily. then i got sick of windows then switched to parrot OS because i thought it would be cool but then gave up on that. after that i switched to steam OS but then got sick of how terrible it was and then i just decided to go to arch so i would have a reason to stick with a distro. and now i'm here. so yeah that's my life story. im goose and i am all goofy'd out.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi everybody.

Not a newbie but was away from Arch for a while. Took a job that required a Mac and which became the daily driver so kinda lost touch with Linux, apart from a cli only VM.
End of contract, brand new desktop and back to Linux. Tried a couple of distro's. Same frustrations. Not much has changed it seems. Decided once again that setting up an Arch box is the most sensible thing to do. Could have gone for one of the many Arch based systems that have surfaced but why not go for the real thing.

Used to have my own installer script but tried archinstall. Worked beautifully. Up and running in no time. Good to be home.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hello.

I'm already somewhat experienced with *nix and decided to install Arch Linux on my MacBook because macOS Ventura's dropping support for it.
Let's see what happens.

VM on Hyper-V - win10 pro / using archinstall.. xfce-Desktop..

I have a questions about pulseaudio update & xrdp..
but I'm not sure if arch Linux on Hyper-V is allowed here..

If this is / emulates x86_64 architecture and you installed via the installation guide or the archinstall script on the official iso, then yes, feel free to ask here.  As on the subforum appropriate for the question, e.g., xrdp questions would most likely fit in the "Applications and DEs" subforum.  Use a separate thread for each unique question (so your xrdb question in one, any pulseaudio question in another likely in a different subforum).

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

hi Trilby,
Inspector Parrot,
-----------------------
many thanks for reply..

My journey to the source..

about three weeks ago.. MS Windows 10 pro popped up message in update settings..

this PC doesn't meet the minimum system requirements to run windows 11...

Lenovo Ideapad G560-M274YGE - Intel Core i5-450M (2.40GHz, 2 cores - 4 threads),
8GB (DDR3 1066MHz), NVIDIA GeForce 310M ]

about the same time.. I was playing around with WSL2 and soo..
Oracle VM VirtualBox Base Packages - 6.1.34.. refused to start any of my VMs..

so.. I had to look for an alternative.. found.. YouTube vid.. by Chris Titus Tech..
How to Setup Hyper V on Windows..

soo.. 1st to try Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.. got Enhanced session mode working..
& its was more or less the same as my old VirtualBox setup..

then.. I decide to try out manjaro Xfce Desktop..
way.. better VM experience..

sooooo... I thought.. why not go to the source.. ]]]]]..
Arch Linux 2022-06, xfce-Desktop install via archinstall....
<28mins install time..  super job.. arch team.. ;-]..

5mins using it.. I forgot I was using a VM...
looking forward to running arch as my main OS..
but first.. I got to get to know it ]]...

soo, started.. doc on github..
Arch Linux virtual machine on Windows10 Hyper-V with Enhanced Session Mode..

it helps me remember, my memory is not what it used to be..

I updated VM, and pulseAudio got updated.. braking sound in xrdp session..
took me two hours to figure what happened and how to downgrade pulseAudio..
sound now working again in enhanced session mode ;-]..

sooo I thought I post link here.. as I think there will be more people coming over to arch now..
that archinstall - script .. is going to result in a lot  more newbie questions coming your way..

super, super job. & and many thanks,
---
