Second monitor resolution issues

I need to work from my laptop for the next 2 weeks (desktop CUP cooler is busted and needs to be sent out for RMA), so I'm trying to set up my laptop to use my Ultrawide monitor as an second screen. Right now it works but the resolution on my Ultrawide is very low (everything looks fine and crisp, just very BIG). I was wondering how I can fix the resolution of this extended monitor.
Some things to know:
- Laptop (HP Spectre x360) has a 4k resolution of 3840x2160
- Ultrawide monitor (34") is 3440x1440 144htz (and yes its displaying at 3440x1440)
- The second screen (the ultrawide) is very zoomed in (might be hard to tell by the content on the page b/c firefox is zoomed out to 60% in this photo, might be easier if you compare the size of my thumbnail to the hulu icon lol)  https://imgur.com/a/8rqhi1X
- The powerbar is not visible on the external screen (not that important, would be nice to see though)
- I'm using i3 gaps
- The second screen also does not "fit" the applications as it should like rofi for example:   https://imgur.com/a/0Qs9CCU
   - You cant even see the search bar in rofi because it gets cut off the screen

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
I've played around with some xrandr commands i saw people mention in other posts, i also played around in arandr. I'm thinking maybe its a DPI issue on the second monitor?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

In a way. Your notebook is hidpi. the external output not so much. There's no generic solution for this.
Some mitigation strategies are outlined in https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/HiDPI# … e_displays

I'd run the laptop at a lower resolution to match the DPIs

Re: Second monitor resolution issues

Hmm, good to know. What about if I were to just mirror the display? Shut the laptop, only use the monitor? Would that fix the issue?

Re: Second monitor resolution issues

You'd have to do so before starting the session because even if the dpi gets updated by this, most running processes won't respond to that.
