[solved] linux-firmware - necessary ?

Hi,

While re-reading the Installation guide, I realized that I did not have the "linux-firmware" installed. (I had intel-ucode and sof-firmware)

I installed it but since the system ran fine without it, how can I know if installing linux-firmware benefits any part of my computer ?

Thanks !

[edit] linux-firmware was already installed in the end

Re: [solved] linux-firmware - necessary ?

I would say yes.
The upstream URL is https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/ke … rmware.git

Looking at the logs, it is pretty active.   OTOH, Many of the changes will be to hardware you do not own, perhaps all. If your hardware all works without glitches, then you probably don't need it.
But something could break if, for example, the kernel package makes assumptions about the linux-firmware (not saying that is the case)

Were it my system, I would install it.  If an update should break something, roll it back.

Edit: I like Jason's answer better

Re: [solved] linux-firmware - necessary ?

well now uninstalling it breaks WiFi, and I cannot seem to find any other way to install the required iwlwifi.

So maybe I was mistaken and linux-firmware was installed after all, or I somehow installed the wifi firmware separately.

Anyway I'm just keeping it now, thanks !

[edit]

found the answer in pacman logs, it was installed after all..... Don't know how I missed that...
