[SOLVED] Ugly cursors on X11

Hello,

On a Gnome Wayland session, the mouse cursors look fine, while on a X11 session they appear "fat" and "saturated" (it also happens on Xfce and on Plasma X11 + wayland). I tried several cursor themes and it happens with all of them.
I wanted to attach a few screenshots, but when I take a screenshot of these ugly cursors, they suddenly look good...
I took some pics with my phone but it's hard to notice anything: https://imgur.com/a/TLJ80Ld

I created a new user account and had the same issue. I also checked my xorg configs but I don't see where the problem comes from.
Does someone have a clue? ^^

Re: [SOLVED] Ugly cursors on X11

The cursor is painted directly into the framebuffer and when you screenshot it, artificially drawn into the frame by the screenshot program
Is this (fat and saturated) a color or a size thing? Please post you xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

Re: [SOLVED] Ugly cursors on X11

Thanks for the explanation about the screenshots.
The "fat" and "saturated" appearance is mainly a color thing, the cursors and their shadows look darker in general, and the outlines are rough.

I tried other things like uninstalling xf86-video-amdgpu, installing linux-lts, but the issue remains. I thought it could be a kernel issue after seeing this Reddit thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comm … en_cursor/

Re: [SOLVED] Ugly cursors on X11

I found a workaround: in the Device section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-amdgpu.conf,  I added the following option:

Option "SWCursor" "true"

This way the cursor is being rendered by software, not by the GPU.
I still don't know what's the root of the issue (maybe a faulty GPU? or a bug in the kernel?) and I feel like this is a horrible workaround, but I will mark this thread as solved regardless.

Re: [SOLVED] Ugly cursors on X11

There's record for amdgpu not liking the output to be scaled, https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=269569

Thanks, I don't think I use a scaled output, but just in case here is my xrandr -q:

Re: [SOLVED] Ugly cursors on X11

What if you run the output at a fixed refresh rate?

Re: [SOLVED] Ugly cursors on X11

My output runs at a fixed rate (143.86 Hz). I tried different refresh rates with the same result.
I enabled VRR in my Xorg conf, then rebooted but it also didn't change anything.

The cursor also looks bad on a Plasma Wayland session, so this bug is actually not specific to X11.
Maybe the Gnome Wayland session uses a software cursor? (since that's the only scenario where it looks good).

Thanks again for your help!

Re: [SOLVED] Ugly cursors on X11

I think I found the relevant upstream issue: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/1513
And apparently there's even an entry about it in the Archlinux Wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/AMDGPU … corruption

Sorry that I didn't find out about it before posting here! (I was using the wrong keywords)
