[KDE Plasma] Media shortcut keys not working

I recently switched from a default KDE panel to a Latte Dock configuration, and noticed that my media keys were no longer functioning (volume up/down, mute, play/pause, etc.). After some digging around online, I was informed that KDE plasma requires the corresponding widget to be present in order for these functions to work. My widget setup was very similar to what I had before, where I had the tray widget present but no dedicated volume or media player widgets. Once I added a dedicated volume widget to my panel, I did get volume control back, but not media control (with its widget)..

Is my information mistaken? Is there a way to have this functionality without needing widgets that I would rather not see? This functionality was working fine for me previously, and this seems like a common use case.

the media control widget is not the same thing as the volume control widget. You didn't have this functionality without the widget, the widget normally "lives" in the system tray by default. If you don't have the system tray widget you need to add the media control widget somewhere.

Or alternatively explicitly configure shortcuts that run the corresponding mpris commands via other means, e.g. playerctl or so.

That's the thing, I still have the exact same tray widget enabled, so I'm confused as to why it is no longer accepting this control.

Check its settings it's a toggle on whether it loads the  media controls as a tray widget.
