New user cannot login with DM

I'm having some issues with a new install and created a test user to make sure that the problem wasn't specific to the user account. The new user shows up in the DM (I'm using gddm) but I cannot login. I can log into my main account and then log into the new account in cli. The test user has a home directory (google said that was a potential issue). Is there something special I need to do to give the new user login access from the DM?

how did you create the test user ? did you follow this
